Do we really need skylights in the shower?

Last night I was taking a shower and looked up at the skylight and wondered to myself, do we really need this thing? I mean it's only practical during the daylight hours, it's a big penetration in the roof that's prone to leaks and weakens the roof, and it lets in a huge amount of heat on sunny days.

So my question to you is this. If the manufacturer offered you the choice would you rather:
  1. Take the skylight as standard equipment
  2. Skip the skylight and opt for $150 cash in your pocket
  3. Skip the skylight and take a 150 watt solar panel in that spot for no extra cost.

I've had a skylight in the shower of every RV I have had and all of them were opaque, not clear, so you could not see in them. I have never seen a clear skylight in any RV. They are necessary for clearance in the shower for many, including me.

You can always shower with a large hat, no one can see you from a helicopter, or working on the roof or tall buildings or space crafts or the space station or mother in laws.

It is the manufacturers way of giving you more head room in the shower, they haven't figured out how to run the plumbing under the floor, mine has the trap in a cutout on the floor, drove me nuts when I had to take shower pan off, nothing but blood, swearing and tears.

Our skylight is opaque, so no outside viewing. But, it does allow in a lot of light and provide about 4" of extra room for the vertically enhanced.

put your solar panel over the skylight

When camping in heavily built areas, like a Myrtle Beach Ocean Lakes tucked in next to the high rises, I like the skylight so I can see who is on their balcony with binoculars watching those who are showering beneath them. ๐Ÿ™‚

Not worried about the $150, I would just rather have the roof space for an extra solar panel.

I think you are referring to the fan vent. I've got both a vent and a skylight in my bathroom. The skylight does not open or vent.

It makes the whole bathroom brighter.
Never had it leak in the 10 years we have owned our TT.

On our maiden voyage with our Keystone Springdale (some 10 years ago), my mother-in-law came with us for the week-end. Well, as the camper was band new and we were figuring everything out, I decided to take the first shower. There there I was, happily showering away when my mother-in-law yelled at me!

"Dave, Drug Enforcement Helicopters are hovering over the top of the trailer and they've got their binoculars looking through the skylight in the shower! You better hide your 'thingie!'"

For a quick moment - she GOT me! I ducked! Then realized .... Oh c r a p! That's was a good one Louise!

Ever since then, I've been conscious of helicopters and airplanes flying over head when in the shower!

I still like the skylight!

I like our shower skylight... It makes for easy bird watching during the day while showering, and star gazing while night time showering. ๐Ÿ˜‰
