I read that some states will increase their gas tax, California 5.6 cents, Ohio 10.5 cents, Illinois will double their tax from 19 to 38 cents, S Carolina 2 cents, and Tennessee 1 cent.

I remember when gas 19 cents a gallon. Now our fuel taxes are double that and some more.
Haslam's last year he cut deals for splitting the money with supporters in the Legislature, for pet projects for Developers, and a list of things, that would take a while. The Legislators were giddy after it passed. The 1 cent is just this year it goes up for several years until the gas and diesel taxes federal and state total the same.
None of this is kosher. Everyone knows some of the pieces of this heists not just here but across the Country and yes the President was talking of increasing the Federal Fuel taxes year before last and last year for infrastructure.
Damage to the road by semis is the big culprit in every sate.
Quite importing and starting producing in America and Locally. People are driving a hundred miles or more to work, and not just a few.
hundred thousand pound+ semis are crowding Tn Interstates so much that one evening, we noted in opposing lanes, bumper to bumper semis with marker lights glowing like a giant carnival with just a handful of cars mixed in for a distance of over 10 miles.
Americans are sick of what is going on but we are just supposed to be interested(and angry) spectators. Won't be a decade before our fuel prices, with taxes, equal Europe's and more if the Greenies get their way, and we now are the worlds leading producer of oil and should be energy independent but prices and axes are going up.

I wish the fuel tax would go to fix the roads and not the general fund. Several threads about damage occurring to our RV'S from poor roads. Perhaps if everyone called the people in charge the squeaky wheel would get the greese.

Wait...wait... you get to VOTE for or against a tax??? I'm moving there. Where is it?

I'd gladly pay more gas tax if it was specifically earmarked for road repair, but in most states it goes to the general fund and can be used for anything (like trains to nowhere).

The last time the gas tax came up for a vote in my state was the first time in my life I have ever voted against one. The ballot wording said the Highway Patrol was involved. Never saw somebody in bear hat holding a shovel.
Face facts; Both parties, no matter what their ads say, want to spend all the money they can. The only difference is one wants to tax everybody, the other only working people.

in ohio they say its for road repair. but the money will end up in the general funds ,guess the general needs a boat.

We never learn.

NJ had the lowest gas prices in the North-East, people from PA, NJ, DE
used to cross the border to fill up their tanks. Great, more tax
revenue for NJ.

So what did our illustrious leaders do? they raised the gas tax by
23c.

So people from PA, NJ, DE stopped filling their tanks in NJ. Result? Tax revenues are down. No sh*t.
I'm not an economist but I could have figured that out.

So what do we do ? we elect a governor who promises to raise taxes.

Are we stupid or what?

Oh and that 23c tax increase was supposed to be temporary and offset
by a reduction in sales tax. So what do you think happened to the
sales tax?

Are we stupid or what?

Yet they keep getting re-elected everywhere. Used to love the union meetings, listening to the B&M session about the latest round of tax increases. Then come election day who is endorsed? What a crock of ****.

Wait until they get the carbon bandwagon wound up.

We all know taxes don't go down, they only go up.

Pennsylvania still holds the honor of the highest gas tax, 58 cents.
I believe we will have 'slight' increases in 2020, if not before.

I mean in IL half the vehicles must be EVs to double the tax.

nope, doubt it. our ethically challenged governor says the money is needed for capital projects, bill paying and the like. he likely wanted to describe them as โ€œshovel readyโ€ but thought better of it. the legislature in their infinite wisdom re-directed a portion of the anticipated revenue into their own pockets in the form of a pay raise.

Great, WA should be jumping on that bandwagon soon.

illinois is also taxing EV owners $248 p/y per vehicle. at the new gas tax rate of $.38 p/g. that's the equivalent of ~652 gallons of gas per year.

Hmmm, EV's don't use gas and bybrids use less. Gov't (fed'l and state) have to make up for the "Loss" somehow. Sad.
