Going Solo?

Okay....we've obviously stayed in one place for too long and this happened: Someone made us an offer we couldn't refuse - a REALLY GOOD, interesting full-time job.

The downside is that there is no opportunity to telecommute. And also, it's a government contract, so it could last a week or it could last years. (Some of you might know how that goes.)

We have an entire Winter Trip planned and haven't cancelled any reservations, yet.

So, I guess my question to my fellow RVers is: Do you/would you still go on the road without your Charming Significant Other (CSO)?

Doing "stuff" for a government entity on a contract that can be pulled or cancelled at any given time. Not to mention the possibilities of government shutdowns and furloughs. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Why can't your CSO go along...

Certainly an option. It's more of a choice between be cold together or go to FL as planned, but alone.

This may be a genius idea! That 130 mile daily r/t commute could be shortened considerably and we could try our hands at winter camping. (Does anyone do that in a MH?)

Gonna have to look into that possibility!

Who will you be working for and doing what?

Why can't your wife go along even though she won't be working with you?

Thanks for the insights so far. Greatly appreciated.

Looks like the start date will be sooner than anticipated. The first solo trip (or cancellation) might be Hershey.

Nope... If we both can't go, we won't go. As others said, we're a team at home and on the road. Now, last weekend, we were at a state park about 40 miles away. I told the wife I would leave the TT there for the week, and commute to work. We almost did it, but she said she had things to do at home. So, I'll consider that, but I won't go on the road without her. I bought the TT so we would enjoy camping TOGETHER. It would just be boring without her.

Husband tried camping and said no thanks have fun. I try not to go on his days off or if we get lucky and both get the same day off. Those are for us. He has his sports. Only married 25 years here, hope to see 57.

I retired a few years ago, my wife is a bit younger and still has a couple more years to work. Although we take some trips together, I also do a number of relatively short solo trips, usually 5 days or so, often Sunday - Friday. The one longer trip I take, Spring Training in Florida, I encourage her to join me for at least part of it, and my sons might also do part of it.

Perhaps something like that will work - some of the trip done solo and the other partner joining for part; maybe with the overall trip shortened. That assumes it is a really good job or the money is too good to pass up, but if it has a 130 mile commute, it may be less than ideal. But even doing the whole trip solo might work, if everyone's OK with the idea. Whatever works.

It could be "postponed" or cancelled. The reservations and deposits are mostly refundable (minus fees). And the campground sites are not likely to go unused.

It's by no means the "Trip of a Lifetime". (Something for us to consider.)

Thank you for the input and food for thought. Additional experiences and polite opinions/insights are most welcome and greatly appreciated.

Wow - 57 years together. Amazing! And cheers to you and MrsSamsonTDog for many more!

The new job will be very time-intensive, especially at first, and there's a (roughly) 130 mile daily commute. Time to hang with friends will be minimal. But there are friends/neighbors/co-workers up north.

Down south there's 1 BIL and 1 birth-family cousin in state, in case of emergency. And of course more fellow-snowbirders than you can shake a wing feather at.

Starving? Not an issue. The workplace has a cafeteria food service. We'll likely both turn into pudge-buckets over winter without each other to keep us on track and eating healthfully and not over-indulging. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Farmerjon's right though: It won't be as much fun without the CSO.

And the tandem kayak will have to be replaced.

I would, and I have. Life often gets in the way and if one partner is really looking forward to the trip and there is no way to postpone, heck I'd go.
