Hot Water Heater Funny Issue

I'm parked at a friends house in Montana for a few days. I couldn't get my hot water heater to heat the water to the usual blistering degrees. I'd run the hot water to drain the tank down with fresh water entering and it wouldn't start. I checked voltages, connections, gas supply....everything was fine. Then I went into the bathroom and tuned on the COLD water and the water was very hot. Turns out the dark green, 100' hose from my friends house, laying in the hot sun, was heating the supply water to the hot water heater to just above the turn on thermostat setting. I was so relieved as I have 2600 miles to go to get home! This morning, upon turning on the hot water heater that wonderful, familiar "click" and "flame roar" was so welcomed! Hope this helps others that might find a similar situation.

I would be more concerned with a dark green hose in the hot sun all day, that water must stink of plastic and is surely not a hose suitable for a drinking water system. If you must use an unsafe hose, at least run it off till fresh water flushes it out and then fill your tank and put the hose away.

I see an opportunity for someone to come up with a set of valves similar to the wh bypass ones to allow an external source of preheated water (by solar) to feed the cold water side of the wh. That way you could use it when there is ample sun and warmth. A side benefit is a greater supply of hot water.

Have a brother-in-law whom used to work for Loweโ€™s in the appliance department. He said anytime someone would ask to see their hot water heaters, he say something likeโ€ฆ Sorry sir Loweโ€™s does not sell hot water heaters, but if youโ€™d like to see an appliance that heats cold water theyโ€™re right this way under the water heater sign.
