It seems to me that there are some people who are bound and determined to make things as complicated and difficult as they possibly can under the guise of "safety" and "efficiency". They try to push the philosophy that if you're not workin your butt off at it then you're not doing it right OR that workin your butt off by constantly working will save you work in the long run by doing a ton of work you didn't need to do in the first place to prevent work you probably wouldn't have had to do anyway. :R

It's an RV! Recreational Vehicle! Put your stuff in it and keep it there. Don't keep adding more stuff. When you're ready to use it put in your perishables and food, hitch it up and go! Once a year give it the good once over and give it what it needs. Each time you use it walk around it and give it a visual. Check your tire pressure now and then. How hard is that? In fact, the more often you use it the better it is.

Bigger is not always better. More stuff doesn't always mean more fun. Making it more complicated doesn't always equate to making it more efficient or safer. If you set it up right the first time there is no reason to recalculate or readjust every time you use it. You don't need to hit the scales, measure your wheal wells, check your levels and angles once you get them right. They don't magically change.

Watch out for idiots and fools as well as workaholics and worry warts.

Rant is over. Thanks for listening.

Would you please stop complaining and get back to recreating.

1. You're 30 minutes past due on washing and waxing your rig.
2. It's time to check the water in the batteries
3. Lube the slide outs
4. Don't forget to rotate the air in the tires.
5. Put water in all the sink traps so they don't dry out.
6. Track down the squeak in the floor.
7. Reseal your roof vents.
8. Install disk brakes.
9. Change out the ST tires for LT tires so you can run at 80 mph on the highway.
10. Put the cover on the RV, then take it off again because you forgot to do step 7.
11. Take your left propane tank in for a refill because you might have used a gallon on the last trip.
12. Install a 5000watt inverter, ten 100watt solar panels, and six Trojan batteries so you can watch TV while boon-docking.
13. Repeat step 1
14. Put some "no stink" chemicals in the toilet.
15. Buy 13 different brands of toilet paper and do an experiment to see if they dissolve fast enough in water.
16. Winterize the rig.
17. Wait a minute, one more trip before winter hits. Dewinterize.
18. Winterize the rig.

Shall I go on?

x2. I love tinkering with it. I'm able to keep mine on my property but have a friend who's also retired and once told me he wished he could store his at home so he could tinker with it.

There has to be a happy medium with this. I've seen busy bee type people, can't stop working in one fashion or another. Everything about twice as much as it has to be and if they're not busy they're not happy. I'm kind of the opposite but at least enough of self starter to maintain stuff and keep things in order. To me the busy bees look like they're fluttering around doing a lot of nothing. To them people like myself are low energy or worse...lazy! Oh well it takes all kinds to make the world go round.

I pretty much agree, once you have things set up correctly there is no need to keep revisiting it unless something substantial changes. Just looking the other day and I have not weighed the rig in almost five years. No reason to do so since nothing substantial has changed.

I would however not say "Check your tire pressure now and then ..." because that can change overnight. I check mine every time the rig moves - of course the Pressure Pro makes that effortless, especially appreciated on a cold, rainy morning!

I guess my question would be "why does it bother you so much? Enough to rant about it". Not enough to do today, or are we just trolling? What others choose to spend their time and energy doing is no ones business but theirs, and they shouldn't be judged for it.

I'm confused.

While I don't disagree with keeping things simple, who told you you couldn't?

Met the love of my life at 15. Three months later she was diagnosed with a chronic and most often fatal illness. Her mother had died from it at the age of 33. We we got married at 17 and celebrated our fortieth anniversary Labor Day weekend.

We've been smart enough to live out our bucket list but time and illness are taking their toll. I'm the one who also started the thread "how do,you know when it's time"

So, DW and I have moved everything into high gear. We expected " GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS" instead we"re being bombarded by negativity. We've realized that some people are smart enough to live life and other people make it their life's work to suck the fun out of everything and they call it "safe and responsible"

Just trying to pass some wisdom.
Bless you and your lovely wife.

I'm with those that tell you not to let others get you down so much. I'm an avid motorcyclist and things aren't so different on any of the motorcycle forums I'm on. Arguments will go on for weeks and dozens of pages about what kind of oil or filters to use, and those argument will frequently develop into serious anger.

Why it's so important that everyone agree is beyond me.

I'm relatively new to this forum, and I have to say that the people here have been very welcoming and very generous with advice that I've found extremely helpful.

Yeah, just ignore all those must-be-done and should-be-done items. Then in 5 years I'll buy your rig for half what it's worth, fix it up and sell it.

I bought each of the following new:
My daily driver is an 87 ford with 500,000 miles.
DWs car is 2004
TV is 2001
1st camper from 1985-2000
2nd camper 2000-2015
New camper 2015

I'm not talking about SIMPLE maintenance. I'm talking about those who insist on making everything everything complicated, difficult, and work oriented when it is pretty darn simple, easy, and FUN!

You are telling us you don't bother to check the lube of the entry steps. You don't sanitize your water tank occasionally, you don't check your power plugs to see if they are oxidizing and correct if need be. You do not check your wheel lugs occasionally to be sure they are torqued up tight. How about the coolant, the oil, hydraulic fluid, brake fluid, tire pressures vary a lot depending on where you have been and the temperature. How about your generator exercising on and on. I have found a lot of close calls by checking on a regular basis in my 45 years of RVing. So far I have had no serious down time, so I will continue.

Maybe for some folks, all the "work" is recreation!

True story: I belonged to a religious organization (I'll keep it nameless), that had some pretty strict living standards. Well, their idea of "no work on Sunday" was something I took to heart and really, had no problems with. Then I decided to start a garden. About the only day of the week I could tinker around with that garden was Sunday afternoon. For me.... it was a lot of fun, playing in the dirt, planing seeds, weeding, you know.

Well, one day during one of their board meetings they called me in and wanted to know why I was "working" on Sunday? HUM? WORK? "WHATCH YOU TALKIN' 'Bout!"

You know, all that "WORK" you are doing in your garden on Sunday afternoon. OH MY... are these folks watching me in my private life? yup!

Well, as it turns out, this was basically a farming community and the folks in that (organization) were primarily farmers. To them a garden was "work". To me it was play and relaxation.

Needless to say, I did not stay with that (organization) much longer.

So you see, what some people call "work" others call "fun". So if someone wants to tinker around with their camper, adjust, change, modify, fix, re-fix, and fiddle, fiddle, fiddle,.... well ... maybe it's just the way they like to "relax" and have fun.
