Max speed towing.

Sept. 2016 issue of Trailer Life Magazine has a big article on Maxxis ST Tires (page 39). For ALL of their various size tires they post a maximum speed of 65 mile per hour. I get passed all the time by RV'ers going at least 70 MPH.....
Slow down and enjoy the trip....

But in a 12 hour day that's an hour difference and at 75mph it's 3 hours.
BIG Deal......
Also depends what you're towing and towing with.
Big ole 16klb fiver behind a 1 ton, I'm sure 65 mph is about right on the open road.
Same TV and a 6-10klb trailer combined with nothing but tumble weeds and jack rabbits for hundreds of miles, 75 seems prudent, no?

This thread is proof that most are clueless on what rating/limits/recommendations/etc really mean...

Things won't instantly blow up, fail, fall apart, etc...just sooner than later...if kept at or above their ratings/limits/recommendations/etc

Why did all or most all of the OEM's remove the red lines on those vehicles equipped with tachometers??? My guess is that they got too many questions asking if they can run it up...or go over...or will it blow up...or what is a red line...

Rev'ing an ICE to its red line is now controlled by a computer...some have that changed/removed via a tune or some such, but in stock form...computer controlled rev limiter...

Maybe this analogy might have some understand or get it...run your ICE up to red line and think it will blow up instantly...nope...few will

BUT...if you run it up to red line often...or hold it there a long time...it will blow up sooner than later when kept below that red line RPM

Red Line on a tach is a calculated point...there is a +/- to it and the designers should choose that point with a bit of design margin...and is where advisors on these types of forums will say been doing it forEVER and no problems...not knowing that they have one assemblied with just a bit more design margin than the normal product...so it will last just past the warranty period (miles or date)...plus something for marketing

IMHO, same thing with tire speed ratings and think tire designers put in way more design margin than an ICE designer does...

We tow @62MPH, this is where the truck seems happiest with fuel mileage and fluid temps.

X3. We were talking with a long-time professional trucker at a rest stop just today. He said he's lost count of how many times people have passed him going too fast towing an RV and... you guessed it, a few miles down the road the tow vehicle is upside down and the RV is splinters.

My tires are rated for 75 and ill tow at 70-72 range. Freeways here run 70-80 and the speed differential gets too high when I row at 60-65. Plus we have to cover the miles out west. I've had 900 mile tow days. Speed starts to make a meterial difference at those distances.

We go 5+/- posted speed limit whether driving our automobiles or RVing. In the West where we do about 90 percent of our traveling, our 15" Maxxis ST tires have consistently seen 65mph, and truth be known, often times a bit more. Road and weather conditions primarily dictate how fast we tow.

Although this may come as a shock to some, the Maxxis tires didn't suddenly blow apart when we exceeded the mythical 65mph explosion phase. After 5 years of faithful duty, we can speak to no issues while towing under such extreme duress, not even a simple flat while sitting idle.

A few mph over on a quality, well cared for, and properly inflated ST tire will rarely cause catastrophic failure. Poor manufacturing/materials, under-inflation, and overloading are primary culprits. Although we'll never go that fast, our current set of ST tires are rated 20mph above 65mph.

My motto: "When in Rome,,,,,,,,Do as the Roman's Do" As long as it doesn't exceed 67 mph for any length of time,, Sure,, I will get 'er 70 or 72, to get away from an unsafe motorist, truck or situation, But I'll settle 'er back down to 65-67 ish. I have noticed that Eastbound stretch of the 10 out of Blyth and into Quartzsite folks seem to really wind it up, But I have gained self control and try to keep it within the safety of the tire recommendations!!
I know I know,,,,A couple of Red Bulls and I wanna be pushing close to 80 like the rest of the crowd,, But you gotta admit,, thats some rough asphalt out there!! And I don't know why,,, but it feels as if you are slightly climbing and the foot goes allot heavier on the throttle,, But self control is what is needed!!
Life throws many a challenge at us,, its tough to say whoooaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
