I've heard you can do an overnight in the Thruway rest areas. Then I heard there is a four hour maximum stay. Anyone know for sure?
Thanks.

We've been traveling the Mass / NY Thru-way for years and years - at least twenty years from Cape Cod to Buffalo - visit family. We often stop overnight and never once have been hassled ...

We took the truck camper - parked in the rest stops and food courts.

Highly unlikely you'd be bothered staying overnight in either a rest area to travel plaza on the T-Way.

We've stayed at Travel Plazas on the Thruway in the past and had no problems. Stopped around 11pm and left by 6am. We always had a ton of company too- big rigs and other Rv's.... just did it coming home in Aug. from Indiana.

We also used rest areas - bathrooms only. We just chose one that had people there already.

Edit: We only used areas in upstate NY and westward....

A few years ago hookers were setting up shop in TT,s in the Thruway rest areas. NYSP was enforcing big time then, now it depends on the zone and who is on patrol whether you get rousted or not.

Stopped at the e/b rest area near Angola a few years back when a travelling companion pulling a TT had mechanical problems, they figured they could limp home un laden and return with a different TV to fetch the TT.

In all we were there nearly 24 hours. Not one of the numerous police and DOT patrols that came through even stopped let alone tried to roust us.

Here are the rules for NYS Thruway traffic PLAZAS which offer more services (gas, food, restrooms, etc) than rest stops:

Please be advised that Thruway Authority travel plazas are posted for a maximum stay of 4 hours and are not designed for multiple day stays. Vehicles left for more than 4 hours at a travel plaza will be towed at the owner's expense.

This info is for Rest STOPS:

There are 11 Parking/Rest Areas located at convenient intervals on the Thruway system. These parking/rest areas are open 24 hours daily and offer parking and emergency call stations. Please do not leave your vehicle unattended at any parking/rest area along the thruway. Vehicles left unattended at any parking/rest area will be towed at the owner's expense.

Here's a NYS website that includes an info telephone number for travelers and as well lists the locale of all Parking/Rest Areas:

Here is a list of all Travel Plazas and the service available there:

There you have it. Thanks for citing your source. Way better than guessing.

I can't imagine NYS coming up with a law/regulation and NOT enforcing it. Seems soo anti how this state works.....specially if they can make money off it;).

I forget what Exit number, but there is Newburgh/New York City North KOA, and Yogi Bear Jellystone Park at Lazy River, both pretty close to I87.....KOA is in Plattekill, and Yogi I believe is in Gardiner.....probably somewhere near Exit 15 or 16

Why bother? Locate a cg near where you need to layover and go there. Safer and more comfortable.

There is no for sure rule.
The 0nly written rule AFAIK is you cannot leave the rig unattended. As a practical matter I think on I90 you will have no trouble on I87 you may find tighter control
