Pennsylvania Speed Limit Increase to 70 MPH

The Pennsylvania Transportation bill will increase the speed limit on some highways to 70 MPH starting sometime next year. They've not identify which highways will see the increase or when the increase will take effect. They will have to do traffic studies first, which could take months.

I think we are also going to see an increase in gas prices, incrementally over the next few years as well, to pay for road and bridge construction.

Yep, ^^^. If not posted, it is 55 mph. Many localities will have a speed limit sign saying "End" above whatever the posted limit was to indicate the limit is raised to 55 mph. Those that don't, you can usually tell when the houses thin out and you've gone a mile or two without seeing a speed limit sign; 55 mph. We live out in the boonies and have gotten used to the system over many years and I don't really think about it much anymore, but, it does take some getting used to, eventually you develop a "feel" for it. Additionally, out where I am, though the limit may be 55 mph, you'd be foolish to actually try that ddue to the nature and condition of many of the roads.
My 2 cents, your mileage may vary...

PA is a beautiful state. The only thing I don't like is I never know the speed limits.
Go thru a town, posted at 25 MPH reach the outskirts posted at 45. 45 is the last sign you see. 6 0r 7 miles later, is it still 45 or 55.
What is the acceptable speed on a two lane state highway.

NY spends a whole lot more money on roads signs and very rarely is there any question about the limit.
If you drive in NY 57 to 62 is acceptable, any faster you are on your own.

All state-owned two-lane roads in rural areas within Pennsylvania have a default speed limit of 55 mph unless otherwise posted.

PA will soon have the nation's best highways. We will soon have the nation's highest fuel tax with a 28 cent increase. This will guarantee we will have the best roads, right??

Since a lot of that money will be spent on mass transit, it might be time to sell your RV and ride in the wagon instead of pulling it.

The second worst roads I have encountered are in Pennsylvania .
The worst roads I have encountered are in Michigan .
My experience is limited to driving in 44 of the 50 states .
Therefore my sample is flawed .
Gas prices in Oregon are consistently some of the highest in the nation .
We don't have a refinery .

Just because Pennsylvania raised the speed limit doesn't mean you are required to drive faster. You can still drive slower to save on gas. I never drive my bus conversion over 65 to 67 MPH even on I80 in Utah where the speed limit is 80 MPH.

Another nasty stretch is I95 up through CT during the summer months. Traffic slows to a creep for no apparent reason. When traffic is like that, I'd rather cruise along doing the speed limit and be bored with the scenery.

Unlike many west states, Cal statewide max towing speed is 55 max. But at that speed you WILL get run over. I stay west of the Devide for the best drives and camping. If you like the east side, I am sure it is beautiful and I will not spoil it for you.

Why is Pa raising fuel taxes? I thought the money from gas fracking was going to save the state!
In the article referenced in this thread, "Stephanie Wissman, Executive Director of the Associated Petroleum Industries of Pennsylvania (API-PA), told Media Trackers that API-PA could not say for certain if the 28 cents would be passed on to the consumer." Stephanie should come up to NYS and buy a case of Pepsi or Coke. Just the fact that NYS is a bottle deposit state adds a $1 to the case of the soda over what it is priced in Pennsylvania, and that is before the deposit. Don't worry Stephanie, the refineries will pass the cost along, just like the grocery stores up here do.
