Pros and cons of purchasing out of state

We are looking at purchasing a Jayco TT out of state. We live in TN and are finding better deals in OH and IL. Are there any reasons we shouldn't do this? What are your experiences with purchasing out of state? Also, if we do this, should we have that dealer install the sway hitch or have it done somewhere at home before we,leave? Thank you.

Oklahoma does not charge sales tax on vehicles, whether going out of the state or staying in the state. So this is an atypical circumstance.

Instead, we pay an excise tax when a vehicle is titled, which may or may not be partially offset by sales tax paid in another state, depending on tax compacts. I've been burned on this, so like I say, do your homework.

Since you are considering Jayco and buying out of state, check out RV Direct. They seem to typically have the best prices in the country on Jayco.

In most states you have to pay the sales tax in which it is registered. Some neighboring states have agreements and processes for dealers to handle that. Some do not so you may have to pay your local state's sales tax when you register the trailer with DMV.

A dealer should know how to handle this, no problem. Call your county clerk if you have questions. I don't know if out of state dealers are required to collect TN sales tax or not. Probably are. Chances are the dealer will collect the sales tax and you will get temporary tags to drive home.

Be sure and contact your insurance agent ASAP.

If it's an individual, again, call the county court clerk. You definitely need to get the title and a bill of sale before you leave. You will pay the lovely TN sales tax when you go to register the RV.

Purchased my class a in TN. Showed my SD drivers license and was given a temporary plate good for 30 days. Paid no sales tax or vehicle tag in TN. Drove to SD and paid all taxes there. Bill of sale given on the spot. Title was mailed to me within a week. I got a copy on the purchase date, when my cashier check cash title was sent to me. This was through a dealer. Did the same with my toad. Purchased in GA. No problem.

We bought in Ohio, live in Florida. No sales tax was paid to Ohio BUT they called Florida, got the tax amount and cut a check to the tax collector for that amount to take with us.

I would certainly check with both states.

We bought ours out of our domicile state to get the best price and absolutely no problems getting any kind of warranty done as we traveled. You don't pay twice on taxes. You pay the difference between the two states.

Like someone said, if you're traveling and need something fixed you aren't going to drive back to your state to fix it and then continue on your trip. You get it fixed where you're at.
No offense, but do you know that for a fact, or are you just assuming that it works that way in all states because it's worked in the states you've been in? As far as taxes are concerned, I mean. Missouri works that way, but I would hesitate to make a blanket statement like that, unless I've actually checked all states.

Are you sure?

I'm pretty sure that all the states have laws and forms to ensure you don't get hit twice.

Not true. I've paid twice where a tax compact was lacking and the selling state had no provision to exempt out of state buyers. It is necessary for the buyer to do his homework for the two states in question.

Depending on which two states, there can be problems with registration procedures and tax collection, if you don't do your homework. I've done various combinations of Michigan, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Missouri and Oklahoma and have had to pay penalty fees twice because the actions of the selling state (Michigan) changed the taxation category in the state where the vehicle was finally registered, or bumped back the "must be titled by" date to something impossible to meet. One of the worst things that can happen is double payment of sales tax due to lack of a tax compact.

When I took delivery in KS they gave me a form that certified it wouldn't be titled there and was exempt from KS sales tax.
