Snake!!!

We went camping Monday thru Thursday at our favorite COE CG here in WV. (East Fork CG at East Lynn Lake) Quite an adventure. Tuesday evening, the wife got a couple of pieces of wood and threw on the fire. She was going back to get more and let out a yell. "Tom, there's a snake in the wood pile!!!". I grabbed my shovel, and went to investigate. I found a not to happy copperhead, coiled up and displeased with my presence. Did I mention he (or she) was NOT HAPPY. I disposed of the snake. In the next 36 hours we were there, we saw several more copperheads and a bunch of snakes in the water swimming that we didn't feel the need to find out what type they were. So just a reminder, in your travels this spring/summer, be careful and watch where you step. In approx 25 or 30 trips to this same CG over the last 5 years, these were the first snake we encountered there. Remember, we are encroaching into their territory when we venture into some of these nicely wooded CGs.

The rangers at the State Park visitors center over at Vantage keep a crook'd stick with which they pick up the rattlers that crawl into the people areas. They maintain that a snake's biggest fear is breaking its back, and that seems to be true. It's amazing to watch how the snake will "freeze" once picked up by its middle...the ranger just walks off with the snake hanging from the stick and deposits it out in the rocks where it belongs.

P.S.

It's a l-o-o-o-n-g stick- no sense taking any chances that the old boy will come to life mid-journey!:E!

you should always look first to see if its a poisonous snake or not. I never kill a non poisonous snake as they eat mice, etc. but a viper is another story. I wouldn't kill one if it was out away from campgrounds, but in the campground, it's going to die.

I know I have to raise my hand that when we are used to one area of the country we can put ourselves in harms way with nature when we travel beyond what we know. I know I did!

Wisconsin vs Florida

1. I had to learn NOT to just pick up a piece of wood, cardboard, box or sheet of plywood that has been sitting on the ground, or turn anything over in a brush pile or even on the ground for that matter.:R
~~~~Snakes, snakes, snakes and all poisonous.

2. Stop picking up pine cones to start campfires.
~~~~Scorpions.

3. Stop putting my plastic storage bins out when parked at a site.
Look under the handles, there are small holes on all of these containers.
~~Bugs all kinds all unidentifiable to me and now in my storage containers.


Wisconsin has harmless Green Garden snakes and you'd be lucky to see one 'maybe' in your lifetime. And Mosquitoes. That's it.

Terrified of ANY snake. Two weeks ago I mulched, looked back to the flower bed and a 2-3 ft. silver snake was there. (DH said garter snake, but he didn't see it. Silver & Gold denote royalty - so it was a King Cobra.) The next day a friend & I rode 20 miles on the Towpath trail. I rode right by a snake coming out on the trail. Later a snake was stretched across the trail. A VERY brave man got to it first and convinced it to leave. Near the end of the ride a snake was coiled near the trail. Everyone thinks they were black harmless snakes - HA! they didn't see them - probably anacondas! Why I love all things outdoors when I hate snakes, I can't figure. I told DH we need to move, sell 5er, bikes, motorcycles, and move to a high rise in the city. DH said with my luck we'd end up w/ neighbors who have pet snakes.

we drove through Pilot Mountain State Park this week and on the way down from the summit, there was a snake in the roadway. Looked like a black snake but we didn't get close enough to determine that! Did I say I don't like snakes????? We may have to stick to resort parks for awhile if we see any more!!

I saw my first two for this season last week here in King george VA. It is the season to be be careful.

The wife and I were tent camping sitting out at Otter Creek camp site up on the Blue Ridge next to the creek enjoying the late afternoon. I got up to get get something and when I came back there was a snake coiled up under the wife's chair. I very softly spoke to try not to scare the wife all that much and said something like I think you should calmly move away from the chair as there is snake under your chair...

That didn't work too well haha... The snake went one way and I went the other way.... Chair went flying... Nothing calm about any of that...

I was afraid the snake would get under out tent flooring. I finally got him escorted to the creek and pitched him out into the cold water with my big stick...

A lady Ranger was driving by just after it happened and asked how were we doing so she got to hear the story right away haha...
