Trailer brake malfunction

Our trailer brakes are essentially useless. When the brake is applied lightly the trailer brake increases until it locks. If the brake controller is adjusted to the proper level this causes the trailer brakes to lock up and jerk free when released. It does not apply proportionally to the amount of pressure applied to the truck brake. Adjusting the controller down does not fix the problem as it only resolves when the level to low enough where essentially no braking is applied to the trailer.

This occurs in every trailer we haul (horse trailer, dump trailer and flatbed trailer). All trailer function appropriately when hooked up to other trucks. We have had the brake controller changed and an additional new controller tested within the same results. All trailer brakes have been inspected and are wiring appropriately. Trailer plug outlets have been replaced.

This has been looked at by several mechanics and trailer shops without any luck identifying the problem.

Truck is a 2003 Chevy 3500 dually. Current brake controller is a Curt brand.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have not had a p-3 but what I have either read or been told no difference in the operation. My P-2 is no an issue. As said before only in a gravel road is when I use the first boost. Not often. My thinking is have what you like.

Forget the P2 and get a MUCH better controller in the P3.

The display is better but it’s performance is the same. Nothing wrong with a P2. They are fine brake controllers.

I owned a P2 and I set it up per directions. I had to change the "BOOST"? every time I changed from Campground speed to highway speed etc. From what I understand the P3 is set and forget as it should be.

I would think knowing amps would enable you to more precisely adjust settings.

One could also wire in voltage monitoring wires from inside the hub so I could measure the voltage under load to ensure good voltage delivery while sitting still.

The P3 does show amps plus some more diagonistics. Major difference between the P3 and the P2.

Operation wise they are th e same.

I too love the P3 for how it works in my primary truck. However I also have an old Reese time based unit that’s probably very similar to the Curt that I have installed in my old truck. As mentioned above, there are typically 2 controls on these unit. The power setting and the gain setting. My Reese works very well and I can’t justify replacing it with the P3. Youjust have to have both of the settings adjusted properly.

There should be two adjustments on the Curt. You seem to be only playing with one of them.

However, quit wasting your time with the junky Curts, spend the $100 and join the "dark side" of Prodigy's P2 or P3 controllers. I have two P2's which I've had for almost 15 years. They're the bee's knees. One adjustment. Also plug and play on a 2003 Chevrolet. Just plugs into the panel above your left toe on the firewall.

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

I use to be a dealer for Prodigy brake controllers. They are very user friendly and dependable. By far the best option for an upgrade.

You want proportional but you have time based.
