I submitted this question to a motorcycle / camping website and received several interesting stories about where people have spent the night. We are of the same ilk; my 6 1/2 foot motorcycle trailer folds out to a 13 foot Pop-up, with a king size bed.

Some of the more interesting ones were in the median on I-65 North of Nashville. Self-Serve car washes are not generally used during a rainstorm and provide more protection than a freeway overpass. One young kid in the Army spent the night on a California beach, and was hauled in to see the judge. He was fined $50. He explained that if he had $50 he would have gotten as room. Sometimes just going to the County Mounty they will let you use a cell.

So what are some of the unique places you have spent the night?

In 1976 my wife, our 2 young children and myself were taking a 6 week long trip in our 18' travel trailer. We were traveling across north TX, before the interstates, on route 82 somewhere.

I pulled in to what looked like an abandon motel parking lot for the night. We all went to bed in the travel trailer. About every hour a car would pull up and someone would go into one of the rooms. The motel must have been one were they rented by the hour!!

We did stay the night, but I had my revolver close at hand.

The begining & end of every trip involves a few nights stay at a friends boatyard on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Love it there.

An extra high full moon tide.

I guess this counts as a bit unusual. Overnighted a few times inside the storage building when we have arrived too late to get to a CG for a first night after flying in.

We have been the only people in a number of CGs. Very lonely. Broke down & spent the night outside a truck garage, Boise City, OK. A boatramp in MN.

Done the usual Walmarts, Cabelas, Cracker Barrels & such too.

Due to some suspension damage on our 5er, we spent a couple of nights inside Hagan's Welding Shop in Missoula, Montana. They supplied us with 30 amp power and water, and we had access to their restrooms.
Not sure I'd recommend that, but I would recommend them. They did great work.

A old gravel pull out just south of the Arctic Circle. June 22nd, 24 hours of daylight didn't realize it was 3 AM. Skeeters didn't make for a restful stop. It was the only place we had a problem with any bugs. I can see how the pesky little vampires drive the animals crazy.

No place unusual for me but my parents have told the story many times about how after driving all day and very tired, all the campgrounds were full up. In desperation they stopped at a local police station to see if they had any ideas. They told him to pull around back and setup in their parking lot. My grandmother was traveling with them and she couldn't believe they were spending the night at a police station.

The left rear of the motorhome fell through the septic tank.

We pulled into a 10,000 acre ranch in Oregon to do a stint of ranch sitting. We were directed to park 'over there' where a mobile home once parked. The rancher didn't know there was a old septic where he directed us. While backing into the spot the rear broke through the top of the septic.

It took two days to build a 'road' under the tire so we could drive out. In the meantime our bed was on a pretty steep slant. 🙂

The rest of our stay was awesome!

January 27, 2014 I spent 23 hours in my van stuck in the middle lane of east bound I20 near Leeds,Al during the freak snowstorm. Thank goodness I had an emergency kit with food, water and other items along with an in van entertainment system. Wasn't too bad just frustrating.

Maybe not unusual for the experienced RVers, but I stayed at a Wal*Mart. New experience for me, and my parents' dog who I happened to be baby(dog) sitting.

As the night went on, the lot filled up with trucks all around me. Being new to the hobby, rolling up to a random spot and bunking down for the night was really cool.

I went to a cavers (spelunkers) convention once with a girlfriend who I found out didn’t like camping. She complained so much and so loudly that the next morning one of the woman in our group, a real no nonsense woman’s liberation straight-razor toten’ woman came over and told my girlfriend that if she carried on like that again she’d come over and give her a whack to shut her up since apparently I was too much of a gentleman to do it myself. There was no more complaining, thank gawd for strong women.

How about the Old County Jail in Rockville, Indiana.... converted to a bed and breakfast now. We bought the outfits at a Party Tree store just for this night.

Back in the 1970's my late wife and I would drive up to Yosemite Friday night and camp along the Merced River on the way into Yosemite. Early Saturday morning we'd go into the park and get a campground for Saturday night. Even back then to get a normal reservation you'd have to book months in advance. Nowadays there's no parking signs along the Merced River where we used to camp. We used to sleep on a pad next to the car, situated between the car and the river so no one could pull in during the night and accidentally run us over.

Can't remember the name, but it was on one of the barrier islands along the gulf coast near Sarasota. It was literally on the public beach. No road, Just a natural space between the palm trees. About 18 back-in spots with electric. Had to walk about 50 yards to pay at the office. People parked along the side of the road and walked thru the CG to access the beach on a regular basis.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

No reservation for campsite at Buffalo River so we set up our popup in a country grocery store parking lot. No water or electric. Counting children we were 9 in the camper. Got a campsite the next day. Had a great time.

On an open spot in the woods along side of a road I took out of Houston with a MH towing.

Before heading out on this road that would shave off a considerable amount of miles, I Checked the DOT website and it said it was a brand new 4 lane with gas stations and restaurants..........

after about 4 hours and seeing absolutely nothing and NO exits and a gas tank reading almost empty and night falling on a road in the middle of the woods, I pulled into an open spot in the woods and sat on the couch with a buck knife in my hands! :B

Long story short it WAS a brand new highway only the state funding for it fell thru and they never completed the road and NEVER updated their website.

So don't believe everything the DOT says. :R:S
