When was the last time?

As an ex-cop, I know there are lots of thieves. Occasionally on this forum and others I hear of people getting items stolen from the RV while camping. I've been wondering when was the last time you've been ripped off. Was it from a state/federal park, a boondocking place, or an RV park? What did you lose? What precautions do you take, by habit, to prevent thefts?

I caught some girl scouts going through my belongings at a state park years ago when I was in the shower. We keep everything put up since we are in a motorhome. All items outside have a locked cable running through them overnight. No problems but we don't leave anything lying about.
Still having fun!

We lost our canoe last week at a lake in northern BC near Chetwynd. We unloaded it at a dock when we first arrived and the next day was rainy so we went driving and didn't use it. We were camped about 100 feet and saw it high on the shore in late evening. In the morning it was gone.

It was a red canoe that I painted with white canoe paint so it was a unique peptobismal pink when stolen. We looked all over the lake and two other lakes. On the way home we stopped at a canoe rally and looked for pink among the 60 canoes.

In retrospect, I should have moved the canoe along the shore so it was out of plain sight and would require more work to steal.

Not bad to have only one theft in more than 30 years of camping - most of them with that canoe.

Never at any RV park or campground. The only time I had a break-in and things stolen was when my motorhome was parked at a customer's location in an industrial area in Gardena, CA. It was all enclosed with a chain link fence but the thieves ran a vehicle into the gate and knocked it down while I was away. Must have been desperate junkies!

Only one incident in an amusement park resort CG, late 90's. We discovered two "Lunch-able" packs had been taken from our cooler, sitting outside our pop-up, under the canopy. Nothing else in the cooler was missing. I had seen two young boys, about 10/11 years-old, cruising around the CG with their little red wagon, eyeing up and pointing out various camp sites. After reporting the loss to the CG security, we watched the same two boys, and their parents, come walking from the nearby hotel complex, the boys brazenly pointing out our site to the parents as they made their way to the amusement park entrance. One can only wonder as to the parents' involvement in the up-bringing of these two "future citizens"???

My Neighbor at a State Campground had his unopened Bag of Chips stolen right under his nose. The Raccoon came to my site and was trying to open up the bag until I shooed him up a tree. I then returned the Bag.

Never Funny but true story a friend and I were camping in a state forest and deer season is just started. This campground had no hookups so its off the beaten path but deer season is in, so there are about 4 or 5 other campers there. We are sitting at a campfire after dark and a couple of really rough looking guys come walking up and start getting mouthy and pushy. The next thing we know there are about 5 guys standing in the shadows with a 12 gauge tucked under their arm. They quietly just stood their and asked the 2 idiots what was going on. The both kinda looked around and asked what was going on, one of the guys said its deer season and you 2 are interupting our sleep. They botrh back pedal out of there and we didn't seem them again. WE have been there several times since with no insue since. Sure was funny to see those 2 take off.

Wow- some other RVer using your rig for spare parts. That is low. Hope they don't come back for the rest of it!

Sure does go to show that it's not just kids/druggies etc. that do this kind of thing. :M

Few years back we had a loaf of bread vandalized by a squirrel in another occasion a squirrel try to get to our water melon by chewing the plastic bowl.

This year, some idiot-punk-etc, decided to break in our cars while camping in a COE campground- Springfield campground SC on the night of June 29th; he or they broke my wife's driver side window and my Excursion's passenger window. They only took my pocket knife from a cup holder. They really made a mess, we had scratches all over the sits and consoles- even blood left in some spots. When we find out it was Sunday morning the same day we were getting ready to celebrate my sons 14th birthday. Great start for an important day.
After calling the insurance company and doing the report with LEOs; we decided to duck tape plastic bags on both cars and finish our day with a bang- end up being a good b'day for my son.
Well "C'est la vie", next month we are going again to the same campground for six days. More cautious and aware of who is around us.

Lost a couple of folding chairs and a big mallet maybe ten, twelve years ago, private park...ever since then, I lock up EVERYTHING.

Maybe 5 years ago, a guy a couple sites over was so angry he was literally foaming at the mouth...someone had broken into his toyhauler and stolen his & his wife's Harleys. (His wife's brand-new 1200 Sportster and his Electraglide.) Honestly...I cannot conceive of it happening and NOT having someone on the CG staff at least know about it. You do not break into a trailer, pick up a pair of 500+lb motorcycles, toss them into your car trunk, and take off in 3 minutes!
