FDA is asking "US"-dog owners, on national TV tonight"....

Why approx 600 dogs have died and around 3,000 have become ill after
eating jerky treats from China made of chicken, duck, sweet potato.???? :S:S

Isn't that THEIR job? 😞

Hello four legged fur lovers :). Not long ago I lost my four legged friend his name, was Greystoke.He was twenty two when he died. Now, I'm not going to side one way or another about this food problem we have in losing our pets to being poisoned from another country or for that matter our own food pet suppliers.
Now , I'm not an expert on nutrition for dogs however,all in the canine family are scavengers, they are carnivorous, they eat raw meat. they have a digestive system to handle that meat. Sadly over the years we are led to believe that dogs require a balanced diet in advancing that premise, Big cereal co. get on the band wagon and give the propaganda how good and beneficial their dog food is. well, if people want to hear and believe that propaganda so be it . Of course, I'm not an expert and it is only my opinion. But my first dog I had he was eating meat raw NOT COOKED. He also ate raw chicken NOT COOKED. He and I were together over 14 years and he died in his sleep, a natural death. As I mentioned I lost "Greystoke" in February, His food was meat, basically the same as my first dog when I was young, My Grandparents dog died after 15 yrs and he was fed meat NOT COOKED. Now as I mentioned, It's only my opinion-but all the dogs in our family ate meat and did fine .Vets check up very rare, as most vets were farm vets taking of the cattle ,horses, dogs and cats ,not so much, But today we have an industry that is marketed and designed towards our pets (dogs) and the spin-offs well, you get the idea. ( cats also ) Now the best person to ask ,is your Vet, ask them direct questions. My Vet has no vested interest in companies that profit from Pet products and my Vet took excellent care of my Greystoke. By the way, Greystoke loved fresh fish 🙂 Its just my opinion and observation, but dogs and cats are not vegetarians. Another observation, dogs and cats have to EXERCISE. Well as I said, its only my opinion. 🙂 hope all is well with you all :).

It is not always the agency's fault for poor implementation of "good rules". Without sufficient funding to implement the "good rules", the "good rules" are worthless. These things should be made law/regulation with ALL of the necessary funding for implementation and continuing enforcement; if the implementation and continuing enforment cannot be afforded (or won't be funded) then don't pass the law/regulation.

Having been reimbursed by Premium Edge for salmonella contamination and the resultant expensive vet bill last year after my dog bled out bring red blood from both ends, then two days ago having a less severe go round again, I'm sick of paying money for high end kibble and treats that sicken my animals.

Recently, Wellness brand recalled some jerky because of extra antibiotic levels manufactured into the jerky. Didn't know that was included at any level.

While searching for a food or treat recall that caused the trail of bright red blood following the diarrhea from my dog two days ago, I discovered a list of pet meds recalled, including Vibac's Iverhart Plus heart worm med my two big dogs consumed, it was manufactured incorrectly, leaving dogs potentially not protected for heart worms.

I too laugh ruefully because the food lobbyist and those who stand to prosper by our purchase of commercial dog food as they wring hands and warn us we might leave out a essential micronutrient if we feed our dogs home cooked meals.

I purchased a Vitamix and excalibrater dehydrator to assst in my dog food prep after my sweet dog was poisoned the first time but drifted back to kibble. It may or may have sickened my dog, and if the food or one treat I provide bears responsibility, the manufacturer may fess up or not.

In other words, they're suggesting manufacturers DO, what most of us naive folks have assumed was being done all along?? (smack forehead)

So true, but the people saying "this is the one" are the media types that read a scientific article and make the leap in interpretation. So often if you go back and read what was really said, the actual paper says there is an association - NOT cause.

Good luck to the FDA getting help from people dense enough to still be feeding their dogs that garbage. My dogs would definitely get Doritos before they'd get any of that jerky stuff, because it is impossible to say who made what, where, or what they may have put in it. Dogs will eat and enjoy anything, as others have mentioned. I've used tortillas in a pinch.

And keep in mind that you, too, have an oven and you can dry all kinds of things in it. Chicken, beef, sweet potatoes.... I used to do bagels when I had them left over. Anything you'd give your dogs can be put in on the lowest setting and dried to jerky. Meat that's properly cooked first will have no risk of e-coli or salmonella. Boil up some chicken and spread it out on a pan and guess what? It will turn into bits of jerky treats!

For the lecithin thing, before you get all wound up about it, keep in mind that this is about the twentieth time that "they" have claimed that they "know" what substance "causes" heart disease.

If the police came out with different suspects for the same crime, one after the other, and said "no, really, this is THE ONE" every time, how long would you keep believing them?

I'm all for scientific inquiry, but take what they tell you with a grain of salt. This is the same discipline that had people giving up butter for decades, in favor of "healthy" margarine full of trans-fats.

I read the posted articles about lecithin waste-products linked to rates of heart disease. It appears that there was one study done in the US. I missed where the French were also included in this study.

Can't seem to locate it at this point. May have been a separate study with a reference to the US. Point was we often look at the wrong thing to determine a cause and effect relationship and overlook something that is a contributing factor because it's either too obvious or doesn't make sense.

This is ridiculous. Let's wait and see what happens when Chinese rvs come to the U.S., how many people will buy them. And they talk about China bombs (tires). Back stabbers.

You really have something against the Chinese. How easily we forget all the incidences of e-coli in U.S. meat recalls, McDonald's and Burger King selling other meat disguised as beef, now the chicken nuggets. Oh I guess, you're right, eating veins disguised as meat it is still chicken.

If people hate it so much, stop buying it. Go to Washington. Oh wait, was that a joke?

A simple first step to protecting oneself is to avoid processed foods altogether- that's where most of the mystery ingredients are. And I don't care if the label says "organic" or "natural", either.
