Re Certification of Propane Tank

I took my 30# tank to be refilled today and was told that it would have to be re-certified prior to filling it. Has anyone had this done and what does it typically cost?

Thanks

In Texas they do NOT stamp them but put on a weatherproof sticker. Doug

that's the case in virtually every state since it is a federal regulation. they put on a new sticker. new stamp may work for someone who is not educated.

Point well taken. I have a 30# cylinder that needs to be re-certified.

Propane cylinders under DOT have to be re-certification done 12 yrs after mfg. date stamped on collar and then every 5, 7 or 12 yrs depending on type of re-certification (External Visual, Proof-Pressure or Volumetric Expansion)

Propane BULK dealers can do re-certifications----certified by DOT for as a 'requalifier'
Some propane fill stations can do it IF they have been certified by DOT as a 'Visual' inspector

CYLINDERS are the portable things usually no more than 30 lb capacity, that you take off to get filled. These have to be re-certified according to the schedule OldBiscuit gave.

TANKS are larger and permanently attached, generally on motorhomes.

Using the terms incorrectly is a source of great confusion.

Portable tanks need recert.. I took a 25 or 30 (not sure which) they not only re-certified, but replaced the valve and re-filled, Total bill was like 60 bucks as I recall (may have been less) Including the new valve assembly and the propane. .

Your local propane supplier may do it (did in this case) but look for the kind of facility that runs bulk delivery. not a "Swap a bottle" place.

I've never paid to have a tank re-certified. They just did a visual check. One time I was told to paint the tank before I brought it back, it had a little surface rust on the bottom

I've had several done. Have to go to a bulk propane supplier, not a gas station outlet. They do a visual inspection looking for rust mostly. Sometimes they spray soap on the valve and look for bubbles. Then they re-stamp it. Some suppliers do it for free, some charge a minimal amount.

Thanks for all the replies. I will have to try to find a place to get it done.
