Securing Honda 2000

A friend had his eu3000 stolen during hurricane Irma, what a painful loss. I'm heading to a college tailgate next weekend and was going to bring the Honda. Made me wonder, what is the best way to secure the gen? At some point, I can turn it off and let it cool down so I can pack in the SUV but there will be times when it is running and I am temporarily away and don't want to worry about whether it is being stolen. It is an older unit , 2004. Attaching a cable to the handle seems the only logical option but a plastic handle isn't very secure.

You should be fine. That's where most of my boondocking is done,
at football tailgate weekends. And as you say, most of the time there are folks around so you don't need worry about bad guys coming around.

I run a cable through the Honda handles, the gas can handles, and the extended run tank and my TT bumper.

If someone absolutely has to have them, they can get them.

like others, when outside I run a cable lock through the handle to the trailer bumper. Otherwise it sits in the truck bed under the cover, or inside the trailer.

If you have time and some basic shop tools, you can do what I did with my Honda 3000.
I am carrying it on front hitch and obviously did not want it to get stolen.
So using parts from one of those cargo platform, I cut the tubings to make short frame under the generator legs.
My generator had rubber pads with metric bolts going from the bottom, up to generator frame.
I match the holes in the tubing and in new tubing frame, I drilled big holes at the bottom and smaller to hold the bolts on upper skin.
So the only way to get in/out is metric socket.
Having access on top of generator legs, I add extra nuts to hold the vibration.
Having plastic caps for tubing end, I also inserted pieces of wood inside, so you can't see the bolts.
The whole platform holds to front hitch with locked pin.
So in case somebody would like to steal my generator, he would need at least 1/2 hr and metric sockets to figure out how the things holds.

I use a bicycle locking cable wrapped around my Honda and secured to an immovable location with another cable. Locking pin hole in hitch mount works as immoveable location.

Honda actually at one point made a security handle for this gen. It was a steel cover or liner for the handle, don’t remember which. Not sure if they still make it or if any of your local dealers have stock. Was like $20

Put a cable thru the handle. Yes it is plastic, but it would require power tools to cut the handle. Such tools can cut metal just as easy.

Any security measure can be defeated. It just makes it harder for a thief. The worries about handle cutting of the Hondas are WAY overblown.

I have NEVER seen a Honda that has had it's handle cut.
I think the reason is that doing this permanently tells the world that it was stolen.

Most thieves want to avoid that situation.

I carry a long dog stainless steel cable and padlock.

SIL made an inbed frame that my genny sat in with a heavy steel strap over the top secured with two padlocks. Never had a worry.

I always use a very heavy chain and large lock. At least to steal it demands heavy cutting equipment.
