Hi Folks,

This is why Li batteries are not a good fit for me.

https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/sk-32_metric_e.html

-40 on Wednesday night.

this has been solved. they now sell bms's with heating options. When I make the switch they will be used in 0f unprotected temps.
Wont the heating option then use battery power?

No, the heating option is powered by the batteryโ€™s charging source.

s/b able to wire it either way and still have low voltage stop the heating to protect the battery. Otherwise need to keep warm to keep the solar controller active. If low voltage turns everything off it waits in storage mode for a power source.

Sounds like a good reason to move south. I have no desire to live anywhere where those temps are common.

Assuming you keep the interior at even a modest 50F and let a little heat leak into the battery box, the batteries won't see anything close to those temps.

Of course, at those temps, lots of issues:
- At around -43C, propane will no longer vaporize. Even at slightly warmer temps, it will vaporize more slowly which can create issue with appliances operating correctly.
- Even if the furnace is operating correctly, most RV's won't be able to keep the interior above freezing.
- Tank heaters and such are likely to be overwhelmed.
- We were in -5F one time and we were going thru a 30lb tank per day...-40F is much colder, so keeping a supply of propane becomes problematic.

RV's have wheels for a reason. They really aren't suitable for those conditions.

I don't think I could survive at that temperature unless I had continuous utility power to heat both the battery and propane cylinders. In which case LFP would be fine.

If power went out, I think I could still make the night to roll out in the morning.

I can't imagine SiO2 retains all its rated energy at that level either.

When do we get a trip report? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Time2roll, when the report comes it will be about the generator battery.

I'm currently in Toronto looking after a friend who fell and broke her pelvis. I flew.

Those of us living in Florida - that's USA for you Canadian friends - we had to suffer thru +67 degrees today. Shorts, sandals, and T-shirts, rooting for the Lightning for another Stanley Cup.

Altho, bet Jerry Gale will root for a different team, much further north!! Hey Jerry, if you're listening ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm just sorry I'm not there to break my personal best for cold--which is -37 c (-34 f).

It will be a good torture test for the SiO2 battery on the generator.

I can heat 100% electrically at -37. Not so sure about -40 though.

Hey Don, yes it was a bit chilly in Regina today.

Here in Calgary it was minus 34 and the wind chill was minus 47.

We had to go out to run a few errands, I zipped up my sweater for the occasion! Still wore my runners though. I'll wait for it to get cold to put my boots on.

We Canucks know what winter is! :B
