Note from moderator,
Please keep pics to a max 640 width as a favor to those with smaller screens and dial up. "IF" you can not figure out how to make the pics smaller, post them, PM me or hit 'notify moderator' button, say you can not resize pics, and I aka blt2ski/Marty will go in and edit/fix.

Nice - I have been looking at what would be a better tow vehicle to use instead of the "wife-required" suburban we have now, which, coincidentally, replaced the 1/2-ton model we sold to get a 3/4-ton to tow our new RV. How do you like the 5.9L Cummins, what tranny do you have, and what kind of towing fuel economy do you see? What trailer & how heavy? I found a 2005 SLT in nice shape for sale nearby with a 5.9L Cummins & a shell on the back, which might sway the wife's desire to have enclosed cargo area. I want to get an idea of what the actual cost per mile will be with diesel vs. the cost per mile with our current gas TV.

I now tow a TH that weighs 9000k dry and 13k loaded (scaled) and the truck tows better than my older TT that we no longer have that weighed 8000k loaded because of the flat front of the TT. Fuel mileage: per the computer, towing now it says 10-11mpg at around 65 flat highway. I like this truck because of a couple of reasons. It is pre emission meaning it does not have all of the extra mandatory emissions BS which yields better fuel mileage and breathes better IMO. It's payed off LOL and it has a long bed with a proven 5.9 engine. It also has the 48re auto tranny. I am on my 2nd transmission and I bought it with 30000k miles on it (2nd tranny installed at 70000k)and now have 110000k. If I was to consider what you mentioned then I would take an oil sample and send it out for an analysis for $20. That could tell you the condition of the injectors among other things. Also look for the "shuttle shift" possibility of the 1st into 2nd gear hesitation issue. Looking at the front end is another area to consider specifically ball joints. If you are really concerned about fuel mileage then I'm not sure a diesel is the way to go? 10-11mpg for diesel at $4/gal VS. 7-8mpg gas at 3.75/gal. You have to pay to play. Good luck!

With your tow vehicle (van), you can tow all day and at least be comfortable with a little move around room. Try 3 days with 8 hours a day in dually with two boys, wife, and a dog. I always thought about a Ford Van conversion with 4x4 and a 32-34' toy hauler trailer.

Ours isn't as impressive as most here but with 4 girls the wife and myself it gets the job done. Hopefully in a couple years we can step up to a 6 passenger dually and a 5er.

Joe,
The image of our Eagle Cap Camper and Ford E350 is taken at Valley of Fire State Park east of Las Vegas and a few miles north of Lake Mead NRA. Its one of our favorite Winter and Spring camp spots....very quiet in winter.

As a matter of fact I have been doing some reading on that spring swap and it sounds like it will end up on my (ever growing) to do list!

I've had a few gassers in the past but this is my first diesel (2nd Excursion). This one has had a few upgrades and I am looking forward to the first long trip.

That should get the job done! Nothing like owning an X(truck that is!!!) One of these days when you want it to handle and pull better, do the V/B spring swap where you put F250 springs under it! WOW what a difference! Happy camping in that awesome rig!!!
