Towing

I have a 2018 Ram 2500 with the 6.4 liter Hemi with a tow rating of 15,563 lbs. My question is I am looking at a 5th wheel that has a gross weight of 15,500 and the dry weight is 13,469. Would this be something I can tow? Also too this 5ver has a hitch weight of 2184

I wouldn't try it with mmy 2500 diesel. It's not just the engine. The driveline, suspension, brakes, and tires all have to be taken into consideration. Nothing less than a 3500 dually under that unit.

What is the payload on the door sticker?
Maybe 3,000# with the gas engine? The 6.4 is a strong gas engine, but with a 13,469# Dry weight that 5er will easily be at 14,500 to 15,000 ready to tow, 20% pin @ 15,000# is a 3,000# pin. If you do manage to carry it, as stated before frontal area will kill you, you may have the HP at high revs, but it takes torque to move larger frontal area 5ers, if you wanted a 5er that big should have gotten the Cummins in a 3500!

The trouble with tow ratings might be that they take a flat trailer, load it with heavy timbers that don't have any height and wind resistance, then they say the truck can tow it.

Now when you are on a steep curving down hill section, and that engine and transmission are whining but the weight keeps pushing, you can't rely on the brakes to slow you down.

It's not what it will tow, it's really what will it slow back or even stop.
