20lb Horizontal Propane Tank out of date....

So, my 12+ year old Truck Camper has an out of date horizontal propane tank that cannot be refilled legally. I'm aware that you can have them recertified for a 5 year extension but no one in my area does this. One welding supply will ship it off for a $40 fee. Online prices I have found are $180+ :E Anyone found a cheaper source?

This issue was one of the reasons I spec'ed both my Outfitters with 20lb BBQ tanks and had Bob do the modifications to allow it.

First camper I replaced the horizontal tank while the second was to deal with the 40lb vertical tank.

I know when I looked into getting some older 20lb tanks re-certified the cost was prohibitive since the re-certification also needed to include installation of the new style OPD valve. I could buy a new tank from Costco for less then they wanted so I did.

Yea, hindsite 20/20. Wish I had ordered special options now but I'll deal with what I have. Probably bite the bullet and spend the $180.

Thanks OB. Amerigas is the first one I checked. They referred me to a propane supplier in Bedford ~ 45 miles away. Would have to drive there, take a chance that the guy was there, leave tank if not, drive back again..... Will call the others tomorrow. Thanks for taking time to reply.

Service is always more expensive in CA.
I just call my local Suburban Propane and they charge $25 for re-certification on 7.5 gallons. Takes about 10 minutes.

So, you want your tank re-certified for a price less than $40 when buying a new tank is $140+? What am I missing?

I can see future problems with refills from sources not familiar with the recertification sticker plus it is only good for 5 years. New tank is 12 years good. Was hoping someone has found a cheaper source.

I got a tank re-certified 6 months ago for about $10. Cheap, quick and easy. Maybe you can drive a little out of your area and find someone to do it?

My propane supplier did a leak test by filling tanks and spraying soapy water on it.
That's it.
Mine don't even have the OPD fitting cause they grandfathered them out
of the law for those made before 1998 because they weren't made for them.
It's in their manual.

He even copied the part from the manual and laminated it for me.

When I was in college I helped my father-in-law hydrostatic test tanks. Now retired I began to wonder who did these tests now. I asked our local propane provider and all he said was, for get it, if you find someone it will cost you more than buying a new tank. That's all I learned on the topic recently.
