3/4 ton truck gas mileage - what is normal?

I have a 99 Ram 2500 V10, it gets 12 maybe 13 mpg tops, while not towing.
I have a 7700lb trailer I tow with it.
I am looking to update my truck... I am aware that I am at the upper limit of most 1/2 ton trucks, and would not be an issue for a 3/4.
1/2 ton trucks post gas mileage, 3/4 ton trucks do not.
I would use my truck as a get to work vehicle most of the time, so mpg will play into my decision.
What is the normal mpg on a V8 3/4 ton truck?(not towing)

Truck in sig gets 13-15 city, and around 17 hwy at 70 mph. I have seen higher but not often. When I need to commute around more frequently, I have an 07 Camry V6 that gets good mpgs and moves very effortlessly.

How many miles is that daily commute? Have you ever done the calculation on what 12mpg vs. 15mpg or 18mpg means per month to the budget?

Today's small blocks are getting 13-15mpg mixed unloaded and up to 18mpg highway. Should be better than your V10 by a long shot.

It sounds like, "If" you could get one of those fourteen year old diesels in a new 2500, you would have a great towing package. Of course, the OP did ask about gasoline fueled pickups.

In the fall of 2013 I ran across an older couple who delivered new travel trailers. While he went off to do paperwork I asked her about their white Dodge 3500 dually, she told me it was a 2003, that they had put over a million miles on the truck so far, and that the original engine had not been rebuilt.

If my math is correct, that's at least a half a million towing miles.

The numbers for 3/4 ton gassers posted here are pretty typical of what I've seen on other threads here and on Fuelly.com

You can do a lot better with a half-ton, if mileage is your primary concern.

Or, if looking used, a 2011-2014 EcoBoost. But check the Payload on the door sticker to be sure it can handle your tongue weight (and gear/people in the truck). Also, suspension/tires could well use an upgrade. Mine did.

The only way a 3/4 ton will match the unloaded mileage of these half-tons is with diesel. And when towing, the diesel 3/4 will likely give better mileage. But as a daily driver, if your commute has a lot of stop-n-go, a diesel may not be the best. They do their best highway cruising.

Don't let the high mileage scare you. I bought mine with 163,000 on the clock. Now has 200,000 trouble free miles. Mine does not use a drop of oil. 5.9 Cummins are million mile motors if maintained.

Have a 2010 f250 CC 5.4 gas. On my daily commute 40 miles round trip 1/2 city 1/2 open roads I average 13.5-14. Best open road 17. Towing approx 7500lbs 8-9. I would say mostly I'm a conservative driver.

Same here. I have a 2001 ram (4.10 rear end) with the Cummins. I can get 23 mpg doing 55 mph. I have a travel trailer with loaded weight around 9,000 lbs. I get 12 to 14 towing.

I get 52~mpg with my Prius with the a/c on but I don't think the OP asked about IT either. :B

My F250 with 5.4L and 3.73 gives 14~ city with my driving. For some reason DW gets 11mpg city. Up to 17mpg interstate 70-74mph. 8.5~ towing our 8500~lb 5th wheel 65~mph.
My Cummins rams gave 2-4mpg better mileage but they sure were noisy. :B

The 5.9L Cummins powered Dodges may have been the best mix of power, economy, simplicity, reliability and longevity of any HD pick-ups ever built.

That could explain their insane resale value, at least around here.

6.0 liter Silverado 2500HD gets me about 14mpg when not towing. It is a lot more enjoyable to tow with than the F-150's and 1500's I used to use to tow a similar trailer to the OP's.
