Anyone have a camper on a Ford Ecoboost

I understand all the arguments against putting a camper on a half-ton, and indeed find them cogent. In my case, a camper will be a short-term RV solution on my way probably to a FW. The Ecoboost can tow 11,000 pounds, which covers the small FW I would likely consider. Plus I assume the turbos would be a big advantage on hills. And likely I would be driving it empty more than loaded, so the decent mpg would be nice. So I am just wondering if someone found a camper set up with the Ecoboost that works.

2 1/2 years of ownership and not a single problem with it. I towed the FW for 5 hours yesterday and can't count how many times I said to DW 'man, this is an impressive truck'.
I had my first experience trying to make a quick stop going downhill. Now I understand when people say the transmission takes over. Downshifted for maximum engine braking when I needed it.

This is an impressive truck!

Towing a 5er is different than hauling a TC. Can't say it enough, payload is the issue. Yes, folks are over, but is it safe? Is it worth the risk? If you can't stop in an emergency, you're putting everyone one the road near you at risk. Not meant to incite a riot, JMO.
Agree. Towing a FW has the advantage of trailer brakes. That is not the case with a TC. Braking and payload would be the issue with a TC.

After using this truck for over two years I would NEVER consider putting a TC in the bed. Neither me nor the truck would be happy doing it.

I got 10.8 mpg towing home yesterday. Started off in hilly terrain (Boerne, Tx), went to Victoria to drop off the MIL and then up 59 to Houston. 60-65 mph when possible.

I do have to agree with another post. This is not a TV for a TC. I wouldn't even bother with the HD. Go with a 250/2500 or better for a TC.

Can I hi-jack this thread? On another thread you mentioned getting a 3/4 ton and matching it with a Lance or AF. Which ones? Be advised, AF are usually heavy. Research the wts carefully. You can't believe the dealers. I know you say you won't over pack, but we all do it.

I have been trying to stay out of this thread in the hopes that someone else would call out the pink elephant in the corner...but here goes; the OP wants to haul a TC and then maybe a 5'er...and he is talking about 1/2 tons...really?!

If there are 2 types of RV's that require a serious truck...these are the 2.

I can't possibly imagine the OP would be happy (or safe) with a 1/2 ton with what he is proposing...

Good luck,

We've had our TC for just over a yr and still have a lot to learn, but I've read so many threads on this subject. Folks will ask and be told they'll be over and may want to reconsider their choices. Months later, they'll be back saying they had made a big mistake. Just a thought.

Not TC related but:
I had another first with my setup this morning. Tanks were full and no FHU where I am so I had to hitch up and take the FW to the dump site. About 80 gallons of waste water in the tanks in front of the axles made a huge difference. I'm guessing I exceeded payload by at least a few hundred pounds.
I wouldn't want to tow too far like that. I think I just found its limit!

I was researching this myself and found that the HD package (2013, 4X4) only comes with a regular cab longbed (3,133 lb payload), supercab longbed (2,265 lb payload), or supercrew shortbed (2,190 lb payload). The problem is that many of the lighter TC's are shortbed models, so you end up with 2,190 lbs with the supercrew. A 2014 chevy silverado 5.3 double cab shortbed, which is the configuration I prefer, is only about 200 lbs less at 1,974. So it depends on the configuration you want really. If a 2WD Regular cab longbed works for you, the payload is similar to or even more than what you get in many F250 configurations.

If you don't go with the payload package, you can get a 4x4 supercab short box with the 3.5 or 5.0 with the max tow package (7700lb GVWR) will be around 2000lbs, similar to the GM.

The engine doesn't matter. What matters is how much over the payload capacity of the truck you will be. It won't make a difference if it's the Ecoboost, the regular V6, or the V8.

Unless you order one with the HD/maximum payload package, you will likely be WAY over with a TC or even a small FW.

The regular F150s have <1500lbs of payload capacity on them, and when you do load them up with 1500lbs, you can REALLY tell.

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

I am maxed out at 7700# on a 2010 F150 with the older 5.4 three valve V8. The ECO has better specs. I can assure you that power won't be the problem. Payload is.

Good luck.
