Buying a New TC Hauler

I started the process today of replacing my 2010 F450 with a 2016 model. The Ford dealers here in Little Rock hardly ever have them though, and I had resigned myself to probably driving to Dallas in order to see and drive one.

My local dealer called me last week to let me know that they just got one in that someone else ordered, then backed out of. I figured I could at least look at it, drive it, and decide if I wanted to buy it or order one.

Turns out it was very close to the truck I had already built on Ford's site, and I even liked the color (Ruby Red). It has the black carpeting and cab accents which is what I wanted.

Both front seats are heated AND cooled! :C

This truck has a sunroof which I didn't want (sorta useless with a TC), a soft tonneau bed cover (not wanted), gooseneck/fifth-wheel prep (not needed now, but you never know about the future). It did NOT have upfitter switches in the dash, and I have a use for at least three of those. The dealer is going to trade the tonneau cover for the upfitter switches, so I'm happy with that.

I'll probably take delivery Tuesday, and when the switches and an extra satellite antenna come in I'll bring it back to them for installation. I've got a few things to pull off the truck in my sig. I ordered some Torklift tiedowns from Tweetys today. I'm going to temporarily use the fifth-wheel 7-way plug in the bed for the TC, but my intent is to install a heavy-duty battery charge circuit on the new truck like I had on the old truck. I'll be using 4 AWG wire for the +/- 12v, and split the camper's umbilical cord between two heavy-duty Pollak trailer connectors that will be located closer to the front of the bed.

I'll be changing my sig pic's soon!

Thanks to all for the complements. I'm looking forward to taking our first TC road trip in it. I have a fair amount of work to do first though. I'm still recovering from shoulder surgery I had back in January, so I may have to get some help with some of the "under the truck" work.

Jim (Boatycall), I noticed that you had a new truck a few weeks ago but I hadn't had a chance to congratulate you yet, so let me take the opportunity now to do so. That is one nice looking truck! No problem with it's "used" status as far as I'm concerned. You let the first owner take the depreciation hit. This is the first new vehicle I've bought in many years, and it was basically the local un-availability of F450's and the total lack of desire to deal with selling the old truck myself that pushed me in this direction. I'm sure you'll be happy with the new truck! :B

Tvov, I was using three of the upfitter switches in the old truck, and will probably do the same in the new one. One switch enabled "Battery Charge Protect" mode in the ECM. Basically, when this switch is on with the truck in "P" and the parking brake set, the ECM will manipulate the engine RPM's so that good battery voltage is maintained. Another switch was used to engage the continuous-duty solenoid in the heavy-duty charge circuit I had installed to keep the camper battery fully charged. The third switch was used to turn on some auxiliary driving lights on the front of the toolbox I sometimes carried on the front hitch.

Grit Dog, I hate to break it to you man, but I already have the truck scheduled to have woodgrain panels installed on the sides. I thought that was still in style! JK :W

Sherrifdoug you just made me feel better about the "deal" I made. Har!

zb39 and dave17352, the GVW of the 2016 is 14K. My 2010 F450 GVW is 14.5K. Why the difference? I don't know. To be honest, I don't know what the difference in payload is between the F350 and F450. The F450 rear axle (Dana S110) is not available on the F350, and the wide-track front axle is only available on the F350 if the right option is chosen. The Dana S110 has a GAWR up to 14,706 lbs but is de-rated in the F450 for safety and tire reasons. The wider front axle gives the F450's an awesome turning radius. What I do know is that I am hauling my ~5500 lb. TC on a 2010 F450, and the only suspension mod I made to it was these homemade stableloads. I may just buy Torklift's stableloads this time.

~DJ~, Thanks! Arf Arf! Grrrrr! :C

Great looking truck!

I'm with you on the "upfitter" switches. My F250 has them, and I use them! One of those "options" that from now on I'll ask about in future vehicles.

You'd think that all Super Duty trucks would come with the switches. If anyone doesn't know, the upfitter switches are just 4 illuminated accessory switches built into the instrument panel that are already wired. If you want to add something, extra cargo light, off road lights, etc you just run a wire to one of the colored wires under the dashboard that correspond with the switch you want to use. Easy to do and a great "option" to have.

Sweet rig!
But whyyyy do mfgs continue putting wood grain in the luxury model pickups? Nothing against your truck, it's bad @ss, but cmon, there's about a dozen different high end finishes now that don't scream 1977 Cadillac!
At least it looks better than the wood grain in the new Ram Laramies.
