Cargo Carrier for Lance 830

Hi all,
Anyone have any suggestions for a rear cargo carrier, hitch mounted, for a Lance 830? I measured and the 830 hangs over the rear of truck 26" which is too long for a 18" hitch extension.

I really don't want to take off the factory hitch and replace with a Titan or Torklift.

I need a 22" hitch extension, combined with the added 4" a standard tray adds, to clear the rear of the camper, so that the cargo tray doesn't hang under the rear 4".

The folding trays seem to have longer shanks, and might work with a 18" hitch extension.

Or maybe this:

Grodyman, I am pretty sure I bought it from e-trailer. It is a big heavy chunk of steel. It begins with a 2.5 inch shank before it reduces down to put my hitch haul on it.

Sorry for the delay on the reply.

With a 24 inch extension the manufacturers reduce the load rating of the hitch by 50%. If your truck has one rated for 500 lbs. then you can safely add a 250 lb. load with the weight of the rack added into the calculation.

My truck's factory hitch is rated for a 1500 lb. tongue weight so even with an extension I could put a 100 lb. rack with a 650 lb. load using a 24" extension. I would not dream of adding anything close to this much weight at the rear of the truck.

For my part I would rather put the weight on the front axle and use a front mounted receiver to do so. The downside is needing to have a custom rack that will be low enough not to block the radiator and impair the engine's cooling system - but it has been done.

I bought a front mount receiver hitch and put my cargo carrier on the front of the truck. Many TC people do the same. Actually lowers the weight on the rear and makes so you don't have to mess with it getting in and out of your camper. I have zero complaints with this setup. My Curt front receiver hitch which bolted into factory holes cost me 115 dollars delivered to my front door and about a hour to bolt on. I put my 3000 eu generator on it and other gear.

I also have a front hitch for a cargo carrier. It works great.

Would something like this work?
Mount-n-Lock

I've got one of their heavy-duty bumpers on my Wilderness TT, but for light hauling, the 4-Square tray seems like it might work for you.

I have an 830 also. I use a 32" extension bought from e-trailer. I put my hitch haul from Harbor Freight on it. To take care of the movement, I bought the "u" shaped rattle stopper and it tightens up the extension where it does not move. I carry my honda 2000 with the fuel, a small step ladder and both bicycles on it without any problem.

When I first purchased the 830, we put the hitch haul directly into the receiver and used some foam on the top rail to keep it from moving. I did not care for that as it was difficult to get items out of it with the hitch haul under the truck.

I installed lights on the back of the hitch haul, so at night the idiots that tailgate can see it and to give notice when I am turning. I use the 4 pin plug to power it.

Hey Wheelholder, do you have a link to the 32" extension?

GMAN,

The model number of the ROLA is 59500. Price is $140 at etrailer.com. Description states from the pin hole in the tube to the front edge of the tray is 10". If your camper is on your truck, measure from the pin hole back 10" and see if the tray will clear the back of your camper to your satisfaction. As you stated earlier, a foldable model may allow even more clearance. They do make a foldable model also. A couple of qualifications. One, my cargo carrier is 6 or 7 years old. That said, the picture and description on etrailer looks identical to mine.

I had a 08 845 for about four years. I replaced it with a 830. I used a 18"
extension with the 845. I also use the 18" extension with the 830, mostly towing a 6x10 enclosed trailer. With a 9.75" ball mount, the ball is within 1-2" of the end of the camper. At other times I have used a ROLA polypropylene hitch cargo carrier that easily clears the back end of the 830. Your picture suggests you have a standard(6'9")bed which is the same length Super Duty bed on my truck. If your hitch weight is going to be under 200 hundred pounds as you stated, I think you could find a workable solution with your present receiver and a 18" extension.

Very good. What model Roland carrier do you use? Thanks.

Thanks guys, already have a front hitch that I use for bikes, 5 total. I am going to try the underneath mount first if there is room.

The 830 has a rear overhang skirt around the back and side wings that has nothing inside it, and is just a skirt to make the camper look better. Your hitch hauler could go in the factory truck hitch with no extension and the wood and chairs under the camper like H2O mentions. Lots of room under there. Superhitch or left and right receiver tubes as suggested above would eliminate any worry instead of using a single 2" tube in the stock receiver.

I use a long extension I had made and I have no issue at all. Can't remember the length but it comes to the end of my camper. I too just use it for chairs and leveling blocks. I have also not used an extension and placed the basket under the rear over hang. Works well if you don't have tall things to carry.
