champion 100263 3400 watt inverter/generator question

i pulled the trigger on a new champion 100263 3400 watt inverter/generator this week. got it yesterday. i plan on doing the 5 hour engine breakin tomorrow. i prefer to use propane more than gas but before i decide on buying 2 20 gallon propane tanks my question is does anyone have experience with this unit starting a 15,000 btu a/c off propane and or gas? i have a new 2018 wildwood tt. i don't plan on doing alot of off grid camping but do plan on doing that on our back property this weekend for a dry run. i wouldn't be running anything else in the tt other than maybe tv and dvd player, fresh water tank pump, and some lights.

From their respective manufacturers websites:

The Champion 2000 watt Inverter Generator is rated 53db @ 23 feet
The Honda 2000 watt Inverter Generator is rated at 53 db at 1/4 load

Why would the Champion become twice as loud at full load if both start off at the same level?

Sorry, it appeared that you were judging all Champion Generators as being "cheap, noisy ("twice as loud") Chinese junk".

Depends how good your hearing is.

And not only is the sound level important but also the tone.

The facts are:
it's a inexpensive Chinese unit.
It' is designed to last about a 1/3 of the amount of time that a Honda will.
They are twice as noisy.
They cost about half of what a Honda does.

Saying a Champion is as good as a Honda or Yamaha is about the same as saying a Kubota or Mahindra is as good as a John Deere or Case-IH.

How many decibels is it at peak operation?
Answer: Sorry, the decibel rating is taken at a 25% load. We do not have a decibel rating for 100% load.

Yes, yellow decibles are always noisier than red or blue decibles. Even when they are the same number.

The Champions rate their generators for loudness only at 25% load. Honda and Yamaha rate them at 1/4 and full load.

For example: The #100263 Champion is rated at 59 dB at 1/4 load.

The Honda EU3000 is 49dB at 1/4 load and 58dB at full load.

So the Honda is 10dB quieter than the Champion at 1/4 load and who knows how much at full load? 10dB means twice as loud so the Champion is twice as loud as the Honda!

Champion chose to rate theirs at 1/4 load so the uninformed will think they are as quiet as the Honda/Yamaha

Do you have a link to back up that statement about champions noise rating? I can not find anything about the load at which the generator was rated at, just distance. Mostly curious.

Hooked up to my 20lb propane tank. Started ac no problem. Ran for another 5 hours Runs 15k ac , fridge, so far so good. And tv and lights .. runs with very low noise less than ac.
Thanks for the update, sounds like a lot of people are happy with the Champion.

Just an FYI, I have that generator and it ran my AC just fine at home (5 ft elevation) But when I got to the mountains at 4-5k feet it wouldn't start the A/C unless every other breaker was turned off and I used my 30/20 cheater plug. It took me awhile to figure all that out, so YMMV.

Oh and what the other people said about the converter (WFCO) is spot on. I could run the generator all day and it would barely charge the battery. Forget running it for 2-3 hours to top off the battery. Upgraded converter is on my list to do when I get back home from my summer trip.

I have an older champion 3400W open frame. Ran many years on my pop-up/ac without any issue. Would not run my Travel Trailer with AC though. Maybe just tired. Upgraded to a 4500 Ryobi with 30amp plug. No issues with it. I like to see that more options are coming out to compete with Honda though. Should help bring the price down for us peasants that can't afford $2000 in generators to only run a couple times a year.

Can't speak on the propane model but my 2800 Champion Inverter will fully run my camper with a 15K AC including the HWH and it still has a little left when switching the economy mode off.

So, yes I'd say I absolutely " got what I paid for". So did my friend that recommended I get one and the two friends that I have that bought one because of me. None of the four of us have had ANY issues, all running campers or race trailers with 15K AC's.

I really would have liked the propane option, but I couldn't justify the expense. We'll probably use the generator 3 or 4 times a year. Only when it takes more than 1 day to get to where we're going. We don't boondock. Only camp where there is at least power and water. I was curious about whether it would run the 15k A/C on propane. Good to hear!
As to the previously mentioned quote from Camping World, I really think it is just a hack job. The person who wrote it probably has never heard or seen a Champion run. Also, from the spelling and grammar, you can tell that he is not a journalist. So it's just someone reviewing a product that they know nothing of, except what the Red and Blue snobs (not the good nice red and blue owners) say. I am now stepping off the soap box, 2 cents poorer.
