Diesel vs gas......................

OK folks, there have been a few to many diesel vs gas threads that have shall we say gone to "Hell and a hand basket"! So if all of you would put in you BEST, no flaming reasons for going gas vs diesel, pro and con, I will either leave your thread, or copy and paste pertinant info to the 4 posts of pro and con of diesel or gas. This can include the GM 8.1 vs Dmax or Ford V-8/10 vs PSD etc too.

Be real and honest in you answers, not hear say, flaming etc PLEASE!

If posts are good ones, I will leave, if inflamatory or trolling in nature, they will be deleted! I will get this stick'd to the top for future parusing for those that need this type of info.

Added 6-23-04

We are getting closer to answers I am looking for etc.

Stuff like Ken's - T-Bone posts are good. There are a few others of you that have not posted, some with a 9 point question and answer type to figure out how you went with one or the other. If you are one of those, PLEASE repost in this thread. I may have to look up whom has done this and PM you, but if you think this is you, you now know what to do.

Also, for those of you with $ per gallon for either fuel right now, I would prefer to see a post with ...."in my area, diesel is typically .10 less than unleaded" then explain your numbers. As currently in the Seattle area, diesel and unleaded are any where from 2.05 -2.30 per gallon, with mid test .10 more and premium about .20 more, with equal high low splits. Two weeks ago those prices were upwards of .30 -.40 per gallon more. people were posting $ per gallon that were for me. "I wish" If someone is reading your post a year from now, they may want to know where your paying 1.65, when the price of fuel is over $3 per gallon. Let's keep prices out of it if possible.

Bert and tin tipi, got into a good discusion on the pros and cons of RPM's, drive train etc. I would prefer to NOT see the quote of the other in responding threads, maybe just write a quick wording of re tranny gearing, instead of the whole 40 words or so in that paragragh, so the repsonse is shorter if possible quicker and easier to read etc.

I have deleted some 15+/- posts, that were off topic etc. Please note, I am trying to keep this at the top, as the ONLY gas/diesel thread in this area. So if one is trying to decide, we do not have to go thru this BS any more. As such, I will be deleting ANY future posts close to resembling this type of topic. I may have to change "this" title to a better one, if one has a better sounding title, to be more positive, better claification, let me know here, or in a PM/e-mail, what ever you feel most comfortible with.

Again thank you for all of you that are keeping responses positive, etc.

Also we could use a few more positive reasons to go gas, as many can see I have both gas and diesel, both have a place! Both have positive reasons to buy that fuel, lets keep the threads etc to that purpose only!

Well here in The greater Portland area I just got diesel for $2.49 a gallon, the crazy Shell station just up the street wanted $3.31! :S

I enjoyed all six of my diesels. But once the novelty wears off, it's just a noisy engine that can't rev. :B
who needs REV`s when You make more HP down low in the stock or modded vehicle. And I dont hardly hear my engine running when I am pulling or not at any speed, unless it is WOT then that is exhaust and turbo`s

When a man's last diesel of six was a whopping 305 hp at the most then he will have no clue as to what we are talking about. Why rev when the job can be done at a quiet relaxing purr.

well my little 6 at LESS than 300 HP does a great job of moving 19,500# up and down hills at the speed limit, at no more than 2,200 rpm's.

To be honest I am not a Dodge guy but when I saw a review of the 1500 diesel getting 30 mpg on highway I thought about it for a daily driver if I got rid of my current rig. My buddy has a 1500 Hemi and I was impressed on the quality of the interior and the smooth ride. My trailers are typically 9K or less so I could still tow them too and those mpg's number are equivalent to my wife's daily commuter car. I bought my diesel for the fuel economy in towing my light trailers and empty (daily driving) not for heavy hauling but the size is a detriment for city driving.
If I considered hauling heavy (3/4 car trailer) I would get the new Ford F350 first choice. I test drove it last time I was at dealership and was impressed with its low end torque, fuel economy and especially the quietness compared to my tuned/open exhaust truck. I like the idea of a warranty so I am not paying a mortgage every time I go to the shop for repair. My buddy tows heavy with his 2014 Dodge 3500 diesel and I went out on a run with him and was also impressed at the ease it towed 25K+ and the solid reputation of the Cummins power plant that would be a close 2nd in my book. It rode better loaded than mines does empty lol

I'm just glad that i bought an 06....best of the Bunch and any Duramax owner will likely attest to that as well. I simply cannot see switching to an 8L gas model for similar or less TQ, and a 40% drop in mileage..even with lower prices..that won't stay low forever....but I can see the market hitting 35/bbl USD...

My take on that is this: Off topic I know but relevant.

Iran is Shia - Saudi is Sunni - they hate each other more than they hate Israel. Iran wants Nukes and with Obummer vacillating and appeasing the Iranians has got the Saudi's scared. Russia supplies Nuke tech to Iran and so the Saudi's use the only weapon they have: OIL. And you can bet it is hurting both the Iranians and the Russians....BIG TIME. A few more months and we could see major social unrest in both countries. If things go bad..and the Saudi's think Iran has a working nuke..dont be surprised to see them go to Israel for some "Airtime" help....

My take - I am an Oil Sands Worker and I approve this message..!

Back on topic .. I still think that in the long run...I will always prefer a diesel over a gas powered engine..1800 rpm cruising at 124km/hr... making 21mpg..priceless.!

cheers,

Sorry to hear that has happened. A tough break, but generally, that is a maintenance issue, or specifically, the lack thereof.

One is usually running summer fuel when an extreme cold snap hits, and no anti-gel in the fuel tank.

That is one aspect of owning a diesel in cold climate areas. One has to think farther ahead than your current tank of fuel. Knowing what is in your tank and comparing that to forecast weather temperatures should get one ready to add anti-gel at the very least.

I've never had one gel up on me, but believe I came really close one morning at -50 F. Wow, that was a brutal day.

I see some stations are charging double for diesel compared to reg unl gas now.

:h

I hate to burst the bubble for some of the posts here, but most ALL the modern diesels will start just fine, without being plugged in at temperatures even below zero F.

They may idle rough, but they'll start. Proper fuel, good batteries, maybe a little anti-gel in extreme conditions, but they'll go.

Mind you, they are correct in that they do take longer to warm up. But even that has changed some. My last two vehicles in particular, a 2011 Ford diesel and my 2014 Ram diesel, warm up, blow warm air for defrost and heat much, much faster than did the 2006 Cummins or 2003 Duramax I had before these last two.

I agree with 8.1 Van that gas engines operational simplicity is something that needs to also be considered. I just bought a 06 Explorer XLT for doing short/quick runs and I don't miss the plugging in when cold, longer warm up periods, diesel fuel additives (cetane and lubricity), idle cool down periods (EGT's) that I have to do for the diesel. It's a whole lot quieter starting up under my neighbors windows and the heat blows hotter on extended idling.
