does it hurt a f250 gas motor to bumper pull 10,000 lbs?

I know diesel has more torque but just a simple question for my phycological purchase. does 10,000 lb towing put strain on a gas motor enough to make it hurt it?

What is wrong with running in 2nd gear.

That is what the transmission is for.

I just finished my yearly winter trip of 2,000 miles each way.

2012 F 250... 2 wheel drive 6.2L Gas.. with 3.73 gears

1,500 pounds in bed of truck. and pull a travel trailer that's 9,000 and change pounds.
total rolling weight of 18,000 pounds ( cat scaled )/

my truck has 159,000 miles... and have made this trip several times now
and drive train had never been repaired...

I returned home 4/12/18... 2,000 miles over 4 days.. again.
and used Zero fluids.

My 2015 Ford Diesel ! ton SuperCab had a sticker on the hitch that said max tongue weight Without WD was 625 and With WD of 1250 pounds. I would check yours because some of the longer wheel bases had 14,000 with WD. The sticker was on the hitch and just something to check....

If you don’t lug it at low rpms, no. If you falsely believe a gas engine running over 3000 rpm is hard on it, yes. If you run it like it was designed to run, no.

My 5 liter pulls my 9500lb 5th wheel just fine.

A lot of the strain is expressed as heat. Transmission fail and engines blow up because of heat a lot of the time. Even with a large cooling system and a trans cooler it is possible to overheat the drive train shortening its life. This is especially true on mountain roads and small secondary roads with much steeper grades than interstates and state highways.

Correct, but reel yourself in from left field now. Let's stay on topic class! Lol

Ford guy. In reading between the lines there seems to be plenty time to make some decisions. This is what i did and would advise.

Pull into a ford dealership and pick up a brochure on the F250 that has all the specs and options in it. Just about all of what you need/want will be standard. Also if you have any questions like bed height etc, take a measuring stick with you.

In about 8 weeks you can have the exact truck you want including color et all.

So in 2012 I ordered a crew cab short box F250 XLT and added on sprayed in bed liner, side moldings, upfitter switches, and 4.30 differential.

Since i don't need it, I also got 2 wheel drive.

Also take note of the tow rating of the standard diffy as opposed to the 4.30.

Now if you are lucky like I am, the stelership has the best pop corn in town also. :W

Good gosh, no. It will be totally fine, even with 3.73s.
Agree on getting the deeper ratios though if primarily towing or in the mountains or altitude.
Have had a couple of the older 6.2 F250s. Both with 3.73s and pulling a grade even at low altitude with considerably less than a 10klb travel trailer resulted in more 2nd gear pulls than I would have liked. Pretty sure the deeper gears will keep it in 4th and 3rd longer.

Don't be afraid to let the engine rev when needed (5000 RPM+) the computer won't let it rev high enough to damage it and that range is where gas V8 engines make their power.

Driving your truck empty puts a strain on the system..........Yes heavier loads puts more strain on the system........A truck is a tool, designed to do certain things. I run down the road with a motor that has less HP, torque etc, at 26000 lbs than your new to you 6.2 V8 Gas puts out. Its a diesel granted. but I would still run down the road with the 6.2 gas V8 in the truck at 26000 with out thinking twice. Thats GVW, not GCW! upwards of 30-35K gcw! You're not even working that motor!

I think 10,000 pounds puts a lot of strain on a truck. Drivetrain, brakes, steering and suspension. The way you drive also contributes to the amount of wear and the longevity of the engine and transmission.

I would suggest you find one with a 4.10 or 4:30 rear end if available. When you find one you like post the specifics about it here, don’t believe your salesman.
