Enclosed Trailer Tires

Hey guys,

Time to replace the tires on my enclosed trailer. Size 205/75/14. LT tires not available in this size.

Searches seem to indicate that Maxxis is the way to go, but wanted to find out what others are using.

I know a lot of the truck camper folks tow a trailer of some type.

Thanks,

Chris

Thats the same size we had on our bass boat trailer and now on our car hauler trailer. Started out with GY Marthons many years ago. They were great tires until they started making them in China. You could not give me one now no matter where its made.

Started buying Maxxis trailer tires a few years back. So far, not one problem. I bought the "C" rated tires. I think I will go with the "D" rated versions next time because I'm very close to the max payload capacity.

Good Luck,
Brad

I installed 4 Carlisle Radial Trail RH (the new ones) in Florida. They ran all the way up the East coast to Maine, and then back out to Utah-ZERO ISSUES.

Please educate yourself on the new tire before bashing-

Yes, that is the result of my research as well. They are trailer tires, but not ST tires. They are Q speed rated at 99mph instead of the 65mph of STs. You will be in spec traveling at 66+mph.

The hold back for me is the extra cost of switching from 13" to 14" rims. I could fit the 185/R14.

Tires I am replacing were OEM cheapo BIAS plys that did not last long. That is why I am wanting to replace with radials. Might do the same thing dadwolf2 did. Then if we have problems we can gang up on Discount Tire 🙂

I had good luck with Maxxis tires on my 5th wheel. On my utility trailer I put Carlisle tires on it about a year ago. I raised a fuss when Discount Tire suggested Carlisle based on the history of Carlisle tires but DT swore up and down that the new Carlisle is FAR superior to the old Carlisle tire and is now a top trailer tire. Haven't had any problems with them yet.

Did a quick search and found over a dozen dissatisfied RV.net Maxxis ST tire owners although they do seem to be the most popular and the most reliable of the ST tires.

The Carlisle RH has a new belt added under the tread caps that is said will eliminate their terrible reliability issues. A few years will tell if it works out.

Having several equipment and enclosed tool trailers on the road running between jobs I've had nothing but problems with ST tires. I prefer tires that will last 7-8 years and 55k-65k miles on any of my trailers.

I have had nothing but problems with maxis trailer tires. I would keep looking for another brand.

Ok, is this a troll or just a joke??
The past 4 or 5 years on the 5th wheel forum the Maxxis trailer tires have been the Holy Grail in tires for trailers....do a search & check it out!

Always with the Kumhos and/or rim changes, upsizing rims, etc......it never ceases to amaze me how quick folks are to spend other people's money!

To O.P.:

You don't say how old the tires are that you're replacing, or if you've had any problems with them. If it's just time to replace and they've served you well, why not just replace in-kind?

Per Discount tires and Carlyles:
Isn't their guarantee enough to take them at their word? And I think you can buy extra coverage if you think you need it...though since you live in Les Schwab Country, I don't see why you wouldn't deal with them. We have for years, and most of our trailers are/have been equipment/cargo-type. We've had no problems with their house-brand ST's, which are built to Schwab specs.

I run specific trailer radials . Karrier Load-Star 5 ply 'C' rated 205/75/15 ...flawless .

I think if you go up in size to a 15", it might have an issue fitting the wheel well with the Dexter Torflex torsion axle because the wheel/tire pivots as you add weight , it flexs into the well as you add weight to it . It might not matter as much if you have a leaf spring axle. check into that if you upgrade the tire size. pics, will scroll of the diff. axles

I think your size is 14"

Thanks for all the replies.

Just talked to the guys at Discount tire and they claim their Carlisle brand has been reformulated. Supposedly a lot better tire now. Been looking at the Kuhmos as well.

I am running Goodyear Marathons (oem tires) on my 6x12 tandem axle Wells Cargo.

On my 8.5x20 Haulmark I am running Dynatrail ST stires. They are a brand that Les Schwab Tires sells.

Ill have to look into the other 2 brands posted above but in my searches, the only D load rated 14" trailer tire is the Kumho 857 and I highly reccomend them. Have 3 trailers and many bad tire experiences, mostly with Goodyear Marathons, but the Kumhos are awesome.
They wear like iron and have the best load capacity.
I put a lot of miles on my snowmobile trailer and the Kumhos get abused on it. From 80mph road trips for days to overloaded trailer towed up rocky forest roads they hold up great.
Just tugged that trailer 2400 mi to AK during frost heave season. Trailer was over its axle rating. Actually wore thru the floor plywood with the tires from bouncing over all the bumps. Tires still look like new and have over 10k mi on them.
