Engine Oil Jug Safety Seals Broken

I change my own oil and earlier this year I bought 4 gallons of Rotella T6 Synthetic diesel oil at a large retailer. When I went to change the oil in the driveway, I found that one of the container's safety seal was broken. Being the paranoid schitzo I am, I hopped in my wife's car and returned the jug to the retailer and explained to them why I would not buy a jug of any oil with the safety seal broken... someone could have bought the jug, used the oil that was in it and replaced it with a substandard product and returned it to the store for their money back. I was able to get a new jug with the seal intact.

Jump to today. Walked into the same store and 10 out of 10 jugs had their safety seals broken on the Rotella T6 Synthetic. I found the store manager and explained to her what I found. I am sure that she thinks I am crazy (in addition to being paranoid schitzo) but that is life.

Anyone else have a similar experience and would you use the oil?

I would not use it just as I would not use peanut butter or any food product with the seal broken.

To the OP, you did exactly the right thing, I would not trust oil with a broken seal.

That's been mentioned before here. Last time it was from WallMart and someone had returned the jugs with used oil in them.

Promptly take back any product with the safety seal or tamper ring damaged or removed. It maybe some knucklehead whackjob or manufacturing defect. Dont risk it!!!

I believe some people pop the caps to get the code under the cap for the "My Miles Matter" campaign, but having said that I'm like yourself, and I check the cap before purchasing Shell Rotella oil and I won't buy it if the cap has been removed.

I wish Shell would packaged the Rotella with the removable plastic seal like other brands that way you know for certain if the oil has been swapped.

Another that would NOT use one with a broken seal. I'm with you in that some idiot bought it, changed his oil and put the used oil back in the jug then returned it for a refund. A reason we do NOT shop at the "large" retailer ......Have not stepped through their door in 4 years.

Never experienced this before.

But I am in agreement with you. I sure would not use it.

I have never found one with the seal broken. But I would not use one that was.
