F150 5.0 vs Tundra

Good Morning!

I have a Springdale 260TBL that checks in a 4890 Dry. We have been towing it with a crew cab GMC 1500 with the 5.3. The truck handles it fine but it is very under powered. The truck has 210,000 miles and its time to replace it.

We have 3 kids so I am totally digging the size of the cabs on both the F-150 and the Crew Max Tundra. We keeps vehicles for a long time. Honestly, I like the look of the F-150 and I know it has more features. I would only be interested in the 5.0 Motor with 3.73 rear end. I'm sure its much better on fuel as well.

I am attracted to the Tundra for its durability. I still see a ton of 2007 models on the road that aren't even rusty.

Is the reliability and resale worth more than the features and high tech design of the new F-150?

Yes Toyota can use WDH. Loved my Tundra too, wish they would deal with the payload issue. Towed my 10000 lb 5th wheel just as well at the F250 gas I have now, only changed to be legal weight wise. The Tundra gave better fuel economy towing and not towing as well, however the Ford weights 1500 lbs more so cant move that for free.

Just a question for the Toyota folks. Do the newer Toyota and Nissan trucks allow weight distribution hitches? Way back when, hooking up with weight distribution would void the warranty. Something about the frame, I think. More than two weeks ago, so I don't remember. They must have addressed that by now.

Congrats on the new truck. I think you will be happy you went with the EcoBoost over the 5.0. If I were buying a Ford, that is what I would go with.

I hope it gives you many trouble free years.

I honestly wanted the Tundra when we left this morning. The payload was a deal breaker for me. We have a Sienna which we love. I even went into this test drive with a bias towards it. The Tundra may be more reliable and may have a better resale. But that is the only advantages I saw today.

We also test drove a Tundra and an F-150 on the same day. First the Tundra, then the Ford. I was only in the Ford for about 3 minutes when I made my decision. I love my new Ford wheels! And I've been a Toyota loyalist since the 1970's.

Former Tundra owner here, and while I loved my Tundra, I'll agree with the OP that the Ford has a better ride and is more refined overall. Both are good trucks and I never had a problem with the old Tundra and finally sold it with 106,000 miles to by the current CTD in my sig.

Kudos to you for your due diligence and research BEFORE buying. Too often we read posts about people that bought a truck and THEN started looking at the numbers... that's an expensive way to go about the process!

I had a Tundra 5.7 and LOVED that thing. Great all around truck, but you see the downfall... LOW payload. I ultimately moved up to my current 3/4 ton truck because I just didn't have enough payload with the Tundra. The Fords and GMs have done a pretty good job of stepping up the payload in half ton trucks in the past couple of years. 1900 lbs used to be 1 ton territory, now its available in a freaking half ton!

I think you will find the Ecoboost to be a great engine, and I wouldn't worry about longevity if I were you. The early early models had some growing pains with condensation in the intercooler, but Ford has had plenty of time to work out the kinks and it really looks like a fantastic option engine. Lots of power, forced induction for higher altitudes and a much lower upfront cost than the diesel engines.

I keep waiting for Ford to finally decide to offer an Ecoboost in the Superduty trucks. Enjoy your new truck!

Congrats on the new truck! Life has been much better for us since we went with Ford and Toyota. A co-worker is in his second 3.5L Ecoboost F150. He traded the first with 140~k miles on it for more options in the new one. He's very happy with the truck as I'm sure you'll be.

Congratulations on the new truck! The new F-150 truly is a nice truck.

I would have been hesitant to pull the trigger on the Ecoboost a few years ago but I think they're pretty reliable now. Just keep her well maintained!

Update:

Today we went to the local Ford/Toyota dealer to try out a Tundra and 5.0 F150. We first tried a 2017 F150 XL Screw with the 5.0. The handling, ride, and power was a significant improvement over our current GMC. I liked the truck, but the alignment was off for some reason.

We went back and looked at other trucks. They had the identical truck in silver, but with tow mirrors and it had the 3.5 Ecoboost. I did not want an ecoboost, but we tried it anyways. The mirrors were much better. The alignment was perfect. My thoughts were that I wanted the tow mirrors for sure.

As the drive continued I began to notice that the ecoboost has far more power than a 5.0. Its also much quieter in the cab. I stomped on it and couldnt believe how quick it was.

We got back and the dealership tried everything in there power to stop us from going to the Toyota side. I told them I had to try the Tundra. They crunched the numbers and the two trucks we tried were within a grand of each other, and the same price as the crewmax Tundra. I checked the payload on the ecoboost we drove and it was 1,956 pounds.

We went over to Toyota. They pulled around a white crewmax. We got in it and were ready to drive when the sales person came out and told us we couldnt drive it. Apparently there is a stop sale on crewmax Tundras due to defective rear bumpers. I asked if we could drive an extra cab and she said yes. Before they drove off with the crewmax I checked the payload. 1,270 lbs.

We jumped in a double cab and off we went. It had more power than the 5.0, but less than the eco. It rode rougher, had more road noise, louder engine, and less comfortable seats. We knew by the end of the drive that the Tundra wasnt for us.

We went back to the dealer and basically got the Ecoboost for the same price as the 5.0 without tow mirrors. I was hesitant to pull the trigger on an Eco. The test drive surprised me. I know it will tow great. I just hope it is reliable!

One more point I forgot to make on payload with the current aluminum F150's. My V8 4x4 SuperCrew has a GVW of 7000lbs and a door sticker capacity of 1984lb. This is within 20lbs of the F250 diesel this truck replaced.

Very important here.. I have a Tundra CM and the payload is pretty low..
