I am looking at a new f150 crew cab 4x4 and it looks like the best payload I can get with those options is just under 1500 pounds. Am I reading the towing guide incorrectly? I know I can get up to 2500 with a regar cab 4x2.

Most of the standard 4x4 crew trucks are around 1500 lb, the max tows are 1800 while the HD payload are 2200+. I have not driven a max tow but the HD payload package is a huge jump in stability. It's not even comparable. Mine has 2171 on the sticker, crew 4x4 with HD payload and max tow.

payload is GVWR less curb weight.

Since teh GVWR is going to be the same (or very close) the extra weight of 4x4 gear comes off the payload.

Think of it this way. Take a 4x2 truck with a 2500 lb payload. Load an extra differential and transfer case in the bed. How much payload is left. In the OPs question 2 extra doors and a bench seat got thrown in there as well (reg vs crew cab). Keep doing this until all the extra parts are in the bed. The curb weight as gone up but not the GVWR so the difference (payload) is less.

I test drove two 2011 F150 Crew cab 5.5' bed 4WD Lariats both with max trailer towing package. 1750-1850 pounds of payload per the driver's door. The Max trailer tow package offers a little higher payload for the 5.5' bed over 6.5' bed. But there is the HD payload package only available on 6.5' bed trucks which bumps up to about 2100 pounds of payload for very well equipped crew cab 4WD F-150s. You'll probably have to custom order a truck with either packages.

Ford bumps GVWR on 4WD trucks, so payloads are similar for the same equipment.

Transfer case weight and gearing... No? Maybe a different spring setup?

With a regular cab long bed with the HD option the payload is 3,050 lb. For a Super Cab with the HD option it's 2,650
For a Crew cab with the Hd option it is (something like) 2250 lb. but I don't have the exact number. The key is to order the HD payload option.

Ok after your replies I found the ford f150 payload selector on fords site. I did see an crew cab 4x4 f150 there with gvwr of 8200 and payload of 2300 pounds. That's the one I was looking for. Thanks.

My 09 scab 4x4 xlt has 1426lbs. I added hitch, cap, and running boards. It sure goes down fast! As said, less options gives you more.

My Max Tow has between 1800 and 1900 lbs. Order it right and spare the options/packages you don't really "NEED".
HD option has even more...2100-2200 lbs payload.

"Most" F-150's are in that range although "Most" forum members have much higher numbers.

Looking at the towing guide 1500 is the cargo rating with 8200 gvwr with the payload package. Maybe I am reading it wrong.

Just looked at my neighbors 150 CC 4x4 6.5 bed, with Max trailer tow. The sticker on the door showed 1531 payload. It is a 2012 with 3.5 eco.

In order to up it, you have to go with the HD package and Max Tow Package.

probably not too far off. Betting both have similar if not the same GVWR. Starting with the payload for the regular cab 4x2 you subtract the weight added by the crew cab, doors seats, etc. Then subtract the weight of the extra differential for the front, transfer case, extra cross members, drive shaft and such.
