Ford Ecoboost to 6.2L Economy

Time for a new truck. I'm looking at a F350 4x4 crew long bed with the 6.2l. I got really spoiled to mid 16's mpg cty/hwy mixed on the F150 for my commute. So come on...I can take it. How much of a hit will I take on economy?

I'm not buying the modern gas gets nearly as good mpg's as a modern diesel in a HD truck. My buddy has the same truck as mine but with the 6.0 liter gas, I get far better mpg's than he does.

These are my last 2 unloaded highway drives. First is from KY down to south Alabama and 2nd is the return trip. This drive is a lot of 65-70mph highways so mpg's are a bit better than pure interstate at 75. As a bonus, the first trip was started with a full tank exactly. 2nd trip started at almost full. The range for highway driving unloaded is nuts.

Last picture was our family vacation from KS to TX and back with the 8500lb trailer attached the whole way. I usually get about 12-13, but caught a nice tailwind for the return trip.
If you'll divide your miles traveled by hours, you can get your average speed (mph). You've also got to deduct the cost of DEF from your mpg.

If you look at the fuel economy figures from 2013 when both engines were offered in the F150 the ecoboost gave about 3 more mpg than the 6.2L: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/2013_Ford_F150_Pickup.shtml

When you factor in the extra weight of the F250 it is probably more like 4mpg difference. That is the main reason that I don't have a 250 right now. A trailer will of course compress the difference some.

Not sure if my truck is an outlier(16 Ram CTD 4x4 crewcab), but I certainly get a LOT better MPG's from the diesel in a 3/4 ton. People tend to downplay the mpg improvement, but going from 17mpg(which I think is optimistic) to 22+ unloaded is a 30% improvement. While towing I went from 8mpg to 12+mpg for a 50+% increase.

I see most HD diesels with DEF getting 19 to 20 Hwy empty, and most report between 10 to 12 mph and this is pulling 12,000#+ trailers. In many of the post here 6.2โ€™s are getting 8 to 10 mph pulling less than 9,000#.

The only way you will get the same feeling as an EcoBoost is with a diesel. To putting a
3.5 EB or even a 5.0 EB in a HD truck would be fuel mileage.

Now figure out how much fuel you can buy with the cash saved from the diesel option and the maintenance difference. Or how much better a nice V8 sounds...

I will now leave before the speeches about doing one's own maintenance and emission deletes blah blah blah.

Not a bad choice! If you are stuck on Ford then go for it. The MPG's will be down. I had a v10 dually and averaged about 9.5 mpg empty. If you are very aggressive in your driving you will not get 12-13 MPG.

My 97 F150 5.4 got about 13.5 so the F350 getting 13 would be awesome.

However, you can get a Ram 3500 with the 6.4L V8 Hemi. This one has the MDS and is reported to get a little better MPG.

I do understand how you feel. My 08 F150 is getting 17-17.5 in mixed driving. Gonna be tough swallowing 12-13 MPG when I move to a HD gasser in the future.

The numbers Spud posted are spot on. My truck trip B hasn't been reset since new and is at 12MPG, with 44,000 miles now. Although it does have a trailer of some sort hooked to it most of the time, I wouldn't expect much better average unless you do a lot of highway miles in a warmer climate. Highway can be up to 17MPG in summer with no wind and around 63MPH.

I switched from an ecoboost F150HD and it was a setback in performance but i don't worry about a thing now, reliability or loading up the 5th wheel and bed with whatever I want.

It isn't as exciting as an ecoboost F150HD but so far no issues or complaints.

I get a little better mileage than spud1957 pulling a 5th wheel with a gvwr of 10,000 but I had to experiment to see what speed was best. It seems as though 62 or 63 mph works best for me. Haven't had it empty on the highway yet but I got close to 16 mpg. on a state road without many stops driving at about 58 mph.

My son has pulled his TT (weighs quit a bit less than my 5th wheel) with it and gets worse mileage than I do with my 5th wheel so I think driving style has a lot to do with it.

I think the Ecoboost with a little more displacement would be a good fit for the Super Duty.

Just to throw the numbers out there. With the diesel, I have been getting about 15 City, 18 Highway (both figuring in the regens) Computer shows 16.7 lifetime for the truck this morning. Have not done much towing yet (Only 50 miles) but the computer was showing 15 to 16 with about 6500 pounds of trailer behind it at 65MPH with the cruise set.

As has been said, it's a price jump to the diesel, but that towing mileage is closing in on double.

And even with the 3.31 rear end, the truck did not seem to notice the trailer was behind it.

I never liked to buy preowned either, but with greater reliability larely and high new vehicle prices, I have changed my tune. Might be worth looking around at fairly new 6.7s for sale. JMO.

Yeah, this subject has been throughly discussed, and speculated on. Bottom line is, if you need one now, and want gas, you have to choose from whatโ€™s available. Going gas? Forget mileage. Youโ€™re going to be buying lots of fuel. Accept that, and enjoy the truck. I bought a new f250 6.2 in โ€˜13, then traded it in for diesel in โ€˜15. So you see where Iโ€™m at on it. Good luck, they are nice trucks.

Also beware it makes power differently. The 6.2L needs about 25% more RPMs to make the same power.

I know. Understand the duty cycle stuff and all, but half or more of the HD pickups on the road are daily driver/weekend warrior part time mommy missle soccer mobiles.
I think ford could draw an upcharge and put more folks in super dutys if they had a hot rod version Eco boost.
Think of the marketing. They already have the only forced induction gasser Pickup. Enter the first forced induction gasser HD pickup!

Theyโ€™re missing the boat just like with the lack of a HD SUV from anyone.
