Help! Ford (F150) has got me totally confused

We're currently towing a ~4500lb tt with a 4L V6 Toyota Tacoma. We've been looking at the Ford F150 w/ecoboost but in trying to figure out what options come with what model (and what options we really want) we've become totally confused. I think the XLT would probably work but it looks like you can only get a 3.55 diff with the eb. I thought we wanted a 3.73 but now I don't know if that's really necessary. Also wanted max towing and max weight but can't figure out if that's available on the XLT (we may upgrade to a bigger trailer some time so I wanted to leave all options open). The FX4 has all the options but is $10k more and has a lot of stuff we don't need or want. We went to a dealer today but the salesman, although a really nice guy, knew little or nothing about the trucks he was trying to sell. So I guess what I really need to know is if a 3.73 diff, max weight, and max towing are that important and what we can get on the XLT.

If all else fails, talk to the fleet sales person, they usually know more about the trucks that a car salesman. Also if you want it, My Son works at the Ford assembly plant and can get you the X plan (if he has any left). PM if your interested, and I'll put the two of you together.

You'll have to order to get the HD payload package. Otherwise, you can find everything you want on a lot (although it will be rare). At the time I shopped, there were only a dozen in the country.

It's one heck of a truck. I just returned from a 6,000 mile trip and crossed some of the countries toughest passes. I NEVER had to get into the power, the truck just tugged along "lazily" under all conditions. A had a 4k trailer, family of 4 and a bed full of crap.

Yes, as others have indicated, Max Tow and the EcoBoost are available in the XLT. The Heavy Duty Payload is too, but requires a 6 1/2' bed in a Supercrew, and will be rare as hen's teeth unless you special order. The Heavy Duty Payload will not be needed for your trailer unless you plan to haul a lot of stuff in the pickup bed. Payload on mine (with Max Tow, but not HD Payload) is 1794 pounds.

That's what I got... 🙂 (not the HD payload however.. For that, you'll have to special order and they only come in specific cab/bed/trim configs)

So, they are out there... Mine stickered for $43k. I got it for $33k with 35 miles on it January of this year. Right off the lot too.. Just sitting there.. 🙂

Good luck!

Mitch

Tow packages are also quite confusing. You want to trailer brake controller and probably want the tow mirrors. The HD package is about payload so definitely get that if you are going for a 5th wheel. They are very rare; probably only on custom orders.

Defently use their web site to build the truck like you want. Then call ford motor co. Don't depend on the salesman or the dealership. The best way to get the truck you want is to order it. Good luck.

Try going to the Ford website and use the option to build your own F-150. I went there and was able to build an F-150 XLT crew cab 4X4 with max-tow and max-payload with an Ecoboost. Try building your truck on the website. The website will give you the correct answer.

Here is the link for the truck I built on the Ford site.
