My best friends 04 f350 6.0

Well as you can see by my sig I own a 08 6.4 and its had some probs over its 80K miles many of which are towing miles. Well yesterday my freind called me and after 67K miles with all on schedule maintenence and taking well care off, The engine had BLOWN UP!. He is mad, he has had to replace 2 injectors and an engine wireing harness about 2 years ago that cost over 2 grand. so if you think about it the truck cost 37K with 2K in repairs plus all maint at ford,thats over $40K for 67K of unreliable service. He now has an great looking yard ornament with his recent job loss no way to fix it.SAD AINT IT!

My 2005 6.0 blew head gaskets around the same miles after a couple years of ownership. 5k fix which ford took care of. Traded off for Duramax been happy ever sense.

Not all were bad, I would guess less than 10%, maybe even less than 5%, but based on sales that is a huge number of failed engines.

Now to clear up a few things, he is the original owner, he ordered it from ford, no chip or any other mods of any kind, something let go and the block is not salvagable. The truck has been garaged since day one! the ford dealer recomends a remaned engine. There is no reason this should have hapened! I have owned 2 6.0 psd trucks an 04 and an 06 both left me stranded and the 04 stayed in the shop ona monthly basis. I also purchased both brand new.I am the o p btw. wills 250psd


Then it not just sad....IT SUX...Big time. If it was me, I would not replace it with another 6.0L.

It may be less expensive to swap in a 7.3 and ZF 6-speed, from a '99-'03 truck, than to do the Cummins swap. The 7.3/6-speed swap should be much easier, with no custom parts or adapters involved, since it was all factory stuff pre-'04 and the '99-'03 trucks are the same as the '04's, less the 6.0 and 5R110.

I was going to say it has only been 8 hours, OP may still work for a living, Lighten up.

Tough choice, $15,000 for a crate engine, or about $15,000 to Destroke it!

Might be sad. Hard to say. Not enough info. Had it since new? Know the real history of it? Ever been chipped? Is it really "blown"?

I cannot blame any manufacturer for not providing a warranty for a 10 YO vehicle. If it blew up after 67K miles, that is a shame. But the owner chose to limit the mileage he drove it. Not the manufacturer. How can it be Ford's fault?

I'm not a big fan of the 6.0 either. But something is missing from the story, here. I'll judge when all the info is presented.

The Ford haters don't need an excuse to hurdle conclusions to place blame.

A manufacturer stand behind a 10 yr old "whatever vehicle"....Not hardly...but only 67,000 miles in 10 years and the engine is gone, and other expenditures before that??...That's an average of only 6,700 miles per year...believe it should have lasted MUCH longer than only 67,000 miles. We are talking a diesel engine right?

Heck, I put over 90,000 miles on a 97 Hyundai Accent over a 3 yr period from 97 to 2000 and it was like new when I traded it in...


Sometimes extremely low mileage can be worse than high mileage. My buddy had a 12 year old Oldsmobile while in High school from his grandma, The motor went out at 50K due to major cooling system issues. While my ranger that was similar age had 175K miles when we sold it, and engine ran great.

It's sad, but not exactly an unknown phenomena. If I had a 6.0 I would sell it.

That being said, it is a 10 year old truck, and I'm gonna guess he's not the original owner....Do you expect Ford to warranty all their vehicles and drivetrains for life?


So FORDLOVER, seems you think this is a new normal for Fords? Aren't diesels suppose to last several hundred thousand miles? And if the new 6.7 starts failing at similar rates that is normal also? Hard to believe anyone would want to buy one, much less own it outside the factory warranty period.

I don't think it's the new normal for Fords, but it's certainly been a track record for Fords post 7.3 Diesel.

But you present your last sentence as if there was an alternative vehicle that came with a guarantee that it will never fail, ever. Sadly that vehicle doesn't exist. If it did, I bet it would sell quite well if anyone could afford it.
