I can tell you that it really makes a difference, I get 50% better mileage, it added 70 ft.lbs of torque and 40 HP to our engine and it paid my kid's way through college.
Oh ya, I almost forgot. While on our last trip it mowed our lawn and re-roofed our house.

Nitrogen is put into tires because it's not as sensitive to temperature changes. It won't drop pressure when it's cold or raise pressure when it's hot out.
The only reasonably legitimate reason for using Nitrogen is that it is probably drier than regular air.
