Question About Ford 6.0 Diesel

Richard_999

I just bought a 2003 ford F350 6.0 Turbo Diesel with 119,000 miles.

It is pristine, but now I read that they are absolute junk, and I am uncertain if I should keep it, and try to use it as a tow vehicle for my 34' Challenger Fifth Wheel.

I would appreciate any input from those who have owned one...

Thank...
Richard

Not sure how this stayed on for 9 pages ? Oh well , I guess everyone is being well behaved !!;)

Yep, it's common knowledge now that the 6.0 is great when running right and a bear when it's not. 50% Pixie 50% grizzly bear.... When a pixie it's your best friend but it can change on you in an instant ... And then your staring into the teeth of a financial grizzly

Hasn't bought a diesel Ford since (last three trucks bought were two Rams and a Hino), likely never will buy another Ford.

Two good friends with mid-sized construction companies did the same thing. Went from all-Ford fleets of 6-10 6.0's to all Ram Cummins for one and and all Duramax for the other. I can't remember the numbers anymore, but they both had problems with more than 50% of their trucks.

I've owned nothing but Ford trucks for twenty years, but I think the 2005 6.0 will be my last. I just put $8000 into it after it blew the head gaskets at 96,000 miles. It should have been covered under warrantee, but Ford kept fixing the symptoms and ignoring the root causes until it was out of warrantee. I'm disappointed in the truck, but I'm even more disappointed in the way Ford treated me after being a loyal customer for 20 years.

Let me guess...you ran aftermarket tuning (chipped the truck) and neglected to change all the fluids at the required intervals? That's what causes the problems with the 6.0L PSD according to many on this forum.

I had similar treatment on a previous Ford ,made me too nervous to put a new F350 in our driveway.

Fear not, like everything on the net the 6.0 problems are severely overblown. That and Ford haters.

Leave it and all diesels stock like the real engineers designed them.
I second this thought. If it doesn't have a blue oval on the grille, I don't want it. I'm on my second Ford diesel, and the only reason for that is the first one was sideswiped on a mountain road and had the rear axle ripped out from under it, totaling the truck.

I used to think this as well. I bought a 1994 F-150 new, 1996 F-250 7.3L new, and 2003 F-350 6.0L used. I didn't have any major issues with the 6.0L on my dime but Ford replaced the head gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, rear main oil seal, and IPR under warranty. I also spent $3500 on "bulletproofing" to keep it reliable that included EGR delete, regulated fuel return system, turbo drain tube, upgraded FICM, and coolant filter. I absolutely loved the F-350 but it was running rough cold (I'm sure it had some injectors going bad because I had the latest inductive flash), had a leaking bedplate which constantly dripped oil on my garage floor, and I needed a bigger cab. I seriously thought about a new Ford 6.7L until I read about some serious issues that some people are having with that engine including high pressure fuel pump failures that Ford refuses to warranty. I bought the truck in my signature and could not be happier. In fact I think my wife loves the truck even more than I do.

Believe me I was a true Ford man all of my life but I guess I'm getting older and realizing that brand loyalty can really lead you down the garden path. Not trying to be disrespectful, just my 2 cents worth.

Oh, and I forgot in this post, but my oil and coolant temps were approaching 15 degrees difference when not towing and exceeding them while towing so I think the oil cooler in my truck needed rebuilding/replacing as well. These are definitely high maintenance units.

How did I miss getting on this thread earlier? Another fan here. Keeping an eye on temps is probably the most important thing with this motor. Doing so can keep a minor repair from turning into a major one.

Couldn't agree more. However awhile back I ran into a guy I've known for a couple years that works at the RV dealer we bought a TT from. He owns a 2007 F350 6.0. When I was looking to upgrade a few years back we talked about the 6.0. He was pretty sure all the bugs were worked out by 2007. I was still leary and passed on the 6.0 we were looking at. Ran into him at the local Home Depot a few months back. He told me he was heading down to CA from OR and the head gasket blew. Truck was all stock. He knows the temp thing and said the temps were all good at the time. $4000 latter, he got the ARP studs, tuner and whatever else needed.
