Small gas tank beef

Anyone else have a beef with the truck makers installing small (21-26 gal.) gas tanks in half ton trucks? Had a '07 (4.7 liter)Ram with a 36 gallon tank, traded in for a '16 Ram (with 5.7 Hemi) and it has a 26 gal. tank. We were stopping for fuel every 1 1/2 hours on our trip to Florida. Can't understand their logic. Local Dodge dealer will put a 32 gallon tank on for $1500-$2000.

Had the same issue with my old Tundra with the 26 gal tank. Would start looking for gas at the 200 mile mark getting around 8-9 mpg towing. It was a great town vehicle but the small tank gave it "short legs". I understand you can get bigger (30 something gal) in the newer long bed models.

This!

I guess one should shop for correct fuel tanks and then take whatever truck is attached. Others have the ability to improve their trucks to meet their needs.

Those that use a tow vehicle for something other than an interstate queen can appreciate a larger than stock size tank.

What not to like? 😉 I shopped for the correct everything! 😉

I got a 35 gallon tank in my truck which I like.
I got an LBZ diesel engine in my truck which I like.
I got an Allie tranny in my truck.

Just think; some misfortunate people bought a 6.oh with a 26 gallon tank. I feel sorry for some peoples choices. :B

THAT is their logic, right there. It's $2000 for the dealer and RAM to split.

Or, they're simply out of touch with the 1% of the market who regularly run these trucks on long trips towing heavy.

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

Lantley,
I was looking for a slightly used, low mileage, F250 crewcab diesel, at an affordable price, which are very hard to find around here. When I found this one, I grabbed it up, knowing then that it had the small tank. I saved more than enough on the truck, to cover the install cost of the Titan replacement tank. If I had been shopping for new, the big tank would have been a "must have".

My son and I installed a 46gallon aux tank in my '17 350. I can go almost 600 miles before having to fill up. we still stop for bladder and food breaks but, sure beats huntin down a fuel stop with the 5th wheel in tow.

My rig is not as big as everybody else’s. A 5,000 lb GW TT towed by a diesel SUV that gets 14mpg towing takes me 315 miles on a 22.5 gallon tank. That’s farther than my bladder, stomach, or butt will go, so fuel tank size is never an issue. But I do sympathize with those who wish they could go farther.

There you go. My 'personal' tank capacity limits my range more than my fuel tank most times......:p

Yeah but I can empty my personal tank on any off ramp or rest area in under a minute and be back on the road before the song on the radio changes. Stopping for fuel every 2-3 hours just s ucks period. If I ran the open road more with a trailer I’d have additional fuel on board, no questions asked.

What's amazing to me is how many did not buy a truck with the correct tank. I imagine they just didn't know any better at the time.
I guess it shouldn't surprise me, many people don't just buy the truck with the wrong tank. The buy the entirely wrong truck for towing an RV.
Research and homework is a must when selecting a tow vehicle.
Unfortunately you can't just trust the dealer, most cases they just want to sell you what's on the lot. Even if the fuel tank is too small for towing an RV.

Why sweat the small tank? 2 tall, thin 5 gallon diesel cans fit perfect behind my wheel wells. They don,t impact cargo in the box. Had to use one of the cans on a long, lonely stretch of I70 last spring but having this extra fuel makes all the difference in the world when hauling long distances over mountains and bucking headwinds. Just make sure they are well strapped in before going over rough roads.

I have a 51 gal titan replacement tank on my F250. I can go over 500 miles. I can travel about 8 - 9 hours of freeway driving with 1 quick break. Typically take off about 6:00 a.m., stop at a rest area about 10:00 or 11:00 for a quick pee and a sandwich, at the campground by 3:00 or 4:00.

Tank replacement was something around $1500 but that was about 10 years ago.

My old 2005 F150 w/ Triton V8 had a 26 gallon tank. We had to be very cognizant of where the next gas station was when going cross country, especially in the large open spaces in the southwest.

My new truck, 2014 F150 with Eco came with a 36 gallon tank. Makes things more comfortable.

My friend has a Chevy 2500 w/ Duramax diesel, but it came with only a 25 gal tank. He had to stop a lot when towing, but he found an after market gas tank that holds 50+ gallons. It fits underneath the truck. He's a happy camper now. (Pun intended).

Only a 22 or 26 gallon tank? That's nothing, I towed for years with a 1965 Chevy Van with a 16 gallon tank. Got 10 mpg (with a 292 ci 6), so at about 120 miles started looking for gas. Actually we planned our trips around gas stations.

Now have a 42 gallon tank in '94 Suburban, sure is nice, less stress about running dry.
