Tip for the day...always carry some fresh water...

I learned a good lesson this weekend. Always carry some water in your fresh-water tank. Even when you have FW hookup at the campsite. You may need it.

We went camping at a KOA Campground this weekend. It was quite windy and for some reason the power went out throughout the campground early Saturday morning, probably from 6:30am till about 9:00am. Since the campground water comes from a well and needs to be pumped, there was no water available, anywhere. This meant all bathrooms were closed. Luckily, this didn't affect us because we had battery power and before we left the house I filled out fresh water tank about 1/2 way (I tend to be over-prepared), but all of those tent campers, TT, and motorhomes without any water stored (in FW tanks or jugs) were out of luck. Truthfully, I'm surprised they don't have a backup plan for this (i.e. generator).

We always travel with "some" fresh water in the tank, road-side stops being the main reason. But we were camped last July, at a private CG in the Hocking Hills region of Ohio, when a "dereche" windstorm blew through, bringing down trees and limbs throughout the entire area. Power was out and roads were blocked for over a day. Like the OP, we were not without water nor power, thanks to our two 12-volt batteries and 1/2 tank of fresh water. Everyone else was left carrying 5-gallon buckets of water to flush, even for the toilets in the CG bathrooms.

I can't imagine the angle-iron braces bolted and welded to the frame, under the water tank, not being capable of supporting the weight of 20 gallons +/- of water, and yeah, I know that's 160-200# of added weight. The peace of mind in having this resource available far out-weighs the risks that are condemned by the "weight police".

We lived in Clifton for a while and bought our latest travel trailer at Funtown in Waco.

As it relates to the original post, the guy who did the PDI at Funtown said that if you carry a full tank of fresh water on our trailer, there is a chance the tank would drop from the mounting while in transit. Of course, that is for the model we have. Others may be different.

Yep just this past weekend Meridian State Park (Texas) had a big water leak - luckily I was able to fill my tank before they cut off the water to fix the leak.

I'm glad this may have helped someone. I would never have thought about this until I experienced it this weekend.

As soon as I get back up to the Campground Thursday I am filling my fresh water tank. All these years of camping and we never experienced a power outage but there is always a chance. Thanks for the tip.

Not to mention not all well water taste or smells good. Sometimes it doesn't even look good.

I do the same thing. Besides, I can go quite a while on 80 gallons, which means that I don't have to use other water sources on many of my trips.

We always carry plenty of bottled water and at least 3/4 tank of FW.

Ouch, @MetalGator, you did good having that water available. Alkali burns from being unable to wash soap off are no fun at all. You have convinced ME to fill the fresh water tank before the next camping trip, even though it is planned to visit a place with full hookups.

The wife and I were staying at a state park in Northern Florida last October. My wife tends to use our shower as a closet and she had a bunch of dresses hanging in the shower. I went to the bathhouse to take a shower. Had great water pressure (initially). I get all lathered up with soap and water pressure stops. No water. I wait for several minutes and still no water. I used my towel to get most of the soap off of me (had shampoo still in my hair), and head back to the trailer. I had to take all of her stuff out of the shower but since I had water in the tank, just flipped on the water pump and finished my shower in the RV. I will always have some water in the tank from now on. I can laugh about it now but is wasn't funny at the time! 🙂

I NEVER travel with a full tank of fresh water.

BUT....I DO fill it up when I arrive at a CG just for that very reason of a power failure. Makes me laugh because I usually am the only one in the CG that has water while waiting for the power to come back on! :C
