Truck Camper Disposal?

Hey all-

It's finally time to let go of my '92 Lance. It's in pretty ratty shape, and while that's fine for me it's not so fine for me and my SO at the same time. So I'm going to be moving on to a TC with a slide, and I need to take the old one somewhere to dispose of it.

I have a stable lift on it, and want to move that to my new camper, whatever that is. Since the Lance doesn't have jacks anymore, since the stable lift, I'm not sure how I'd get it off the truck...

So I think in essence I'm just not quite sure how to go about getting rid of it.

Any thoughts?

Our county (Chautauqua) has a landfill site in the center of the county. You can (for a fee) dump most anything there, as long as the freon has been removed (they'll do it for $15), it doesn't have any hazardous chemicals, and it's not a tire.

I think a camper would fall under the demolition & construction waste category, which will cost you $33.50 / ton.

It looks like for you, this is the "Dump":

What's a dump?

I have a small dump trailer load of construction debris from a deck replacement project. I've called around the town and county, to every refuse hauler in the area, and NOBODY will take it unless I spend several days cutting it up into 4' pieces. Then I can put it out by the road and my normal garbage pickup will take it.

Everybody just says "take it to the dump." I ask "Where's the dump?" They say, "Uh, I dunno."

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

Yea, this kind of got away from camper disposal... Sorry Wayne.

Unfortunately we have gone through our finances again, and the new camper is a bad decision for us. So I'm going to have to find a way to replace our rusted out old bumper so we can go camping again.

The old camper isn't in dumpster shape, to be honest, I recently recaulked the entire roof, and every single seam on the camper. At least she's water tight! 🙂

I just didn't want a big hassle with getting rid of something that wasn't worth much.

You might want to look at both pictures a little closer. Yours tucks up no closer then the one I posted. Compare the gap below the body at the rear in the two pictures. Both are determined by how far below the frame the rear hitch sits and appear to be within an inch of each other.

Done now.

Holy cow, look at how far extended those Stable Lift frame brackets you showed are! Mine aren't out nearly that low! You've posted an extremely low SL and an unusually high-clearance pop-up camper. I call that stacking the deck.
This has been my experience for over ten years of Stable Lift use. I have some very deep scars on the lift hoop from rubbing on boulders. Fact is, if installed correctly, there is no reason I have ever seen to loose more than 2-inches of ground clearance.

I think Steve's photos and comments show he is not informed enough on the Stable Lift to see the lifts in his photos are incorrectly installed.

I got rid of a camper once by getting permission from the fire dept to burn it. They came out to watch how quickly they go. Even with aluminum siding it went bye bye in a matter of minutes. Like the time of a short coffee break. The aluminum sizzled and dripped into puddles we picked up after cooling down,

I was surprised how fast it went but we had a brush burn pile going real hot first and rolled that camper over the fire.

Incidently, California has more mountains than Colorado.

Because your jacks seem to retract higher than most. Sure the SL has less clearance than you do.
But when you do smack it, it has a lot better chance of survival than a corner jack does.
That's the trade off: better clearance but super fragile, or a bit less clearance and tough.

I think it'll go about anywhere someone carrying a big hardside wants to go. I don't think my lift hangs any lower than my diffs already do anyway. Here's mine:

Even if the SL tube was flush against the body of that truck (which isn't going to happen if you have a rear hitch mounted anyways) you can see that the jack foot would still be at least 8 inches higher off the ground then the bottom of the SL.

How exactly is my camper "unusually high clearance"? The fact that it is a pop-up is immaterial to the equation. My truck is sitting at stock height with only a half inch of extra ground clearance due to the tires being 1 inch taller then the largest OEM tires for it.

Feel free to post pictures showing your ground clearance to the bottom of the SL tubes on your rig.

Let's not get too sideways here... I only mentioned SL's a few post ago in terms of off roading because the OP has one and is considering to go with E-jacks on a different camper. He is from Colorado and I know how we (I) tend to be more apt to get more in the boondocks here perhaps more so than perhaps those in less mountainous states. From what I hear folks who have SL's really like them... OP should be aware that a different lift system is well, different. Not having SL's might give one a more sense of freedom to go where not previously permissible... but with either system there is the potential for damage if not aware.

No doubt that SL do have more stuff hanging low. Am not saying that one cannot go off road, but I would assume (having not owned one) that one would need to be more careful. For my type of camping I would not own one, but not tying to dissuade anyone.

An advantage of jacks over SL's is the ease of removing them in the field if a situation present an instance where a lift system is a hindrance.
