I do the same thing. I’m in Western Mass and will leave around 7pm and take 95. NY and the GW are not a problem at that time and it is quicker.

I’m at Fort Wilderness now from Cape Cod. Took the Tappan Zee to Garden State Pkwy to 95.

Personally, I wanted the most direct route. We left on a Friday night, quick overnight sleep at a truck stop and was past Richmond by mid morning Saturday. Easy drive after that.

Good luck!

Thank you all for suggestions. Have a co worker headed to Florida so he will give me road conditions. I will then choose my route. We are headed to Fort Wilderness.

Thanks Kevin

Cannon, most of the routes are similar....I would take 95 to 495 to 90 to 84 to Newburgh,NY..then 87 south to Sufferin and 287 for 45 miles to 78 west to 81 to Winchester,Va....pickup I-66 for 25 miles to Va rt 17 thru Warrenton,Va to 95 below DC but just above Richmond....not sure where you are going in Florida,so can't help there...Chuck

In April, it may be better to take I-95 due to weather. A favorite route of the forum is the TZ bridge to I-287 to I-78 to Harrisburg to pick up I-81 south. In Winchester VA, you can use US17/US50 to get back to I-95 just north of Fredricksburg VA, missing Baltimore/DC completely.

Been back and forth several times.

Another vote for 81-77-26 but we get on US301 in SC to FLORIDA.

Avoid 95 in the NE.

Yep, we've used the 81-77-26-95 route for years now, and seldom run into much in the way of significant traffic. Once in FL, we take 10 to 301 to 75, but that may not fit with your destination.

We are in the middle of southern Connecticut, so we always just go over the Tappan Zee bridge (which is NEW and mostly finished now!) and loop around New York City and Newark. That is I287, exit 21 I believe in New York off of I95 (just after the Connecticut border). For us, this does mean going down I95 in Connecticut - which I have decided actually has worse traffic than New York or New Jersey.

As to the new Tappan Zee Bridge, stay out of the far right lane. I don't know if they will change them eventually, but they have water drains there that will shake and move you all over the place. Typical..... brand new bridge, and they have to put in something to remind you of how bad the old bridge was!

jmo but Atlanta is as bad as Boston,NYC,Washington DC,and other real large cities. Take 81 south then go east to 95near Richmond Va. take bypass around Richmond. Or stay on 81 until South Carolina then east to 95. I have done this several times coming from Maine.

x2. Bypass NYC, Philadelphia and Baltimore/DC.

What Veebyes said... We're in NH - used that approach last spring - MUCH nicer roads. Cut east/south again onto I-77 in VA, south on I-26 to I-95. Would use that route again!

Aim for Binghamton, NY. Get on 81 & stay on it to Knoxville, TN. Gets you well clear of the whole I95 mess.

IMO, you either have to go down 95 or p/u 84 west to 81 south and go southeast and p/u 95 south again or 81 south and kinda zig-zag to 75 south (think this way takes you thru Atlanta)
