Roll Call Alaska 2013

Just thought I'd start a thread regarding who will be starting up to Alaska in 2013. It would be nice if we could share information so everyone has a memorable and safe trip.
We will be leaving around the end of May out of Las Vegas. We will be traveling with our 40' MH and towing our Equinox car. We are heading up with my husband's cousin and her husband and they have an airstream.
We have gone before but in 2005 so we are really looking forward again to the adventure. It is surely a trip of a lifetime and to do it more than once is a blessing. We are only on this earth for a short while.
Travel safe!

I sincerely hope that "when the roll is called up yonder" we will be there. We were ready to go this year when a family emergency delayed us and now I am afraid to anger the Travel Gods by making a committment. We do plan to leave NC by mid-May. I will stay tuned to hear who else is traveling from our neck of the woods. lizzie

Nope, not next year. Doing a 10,000 mile loop within the 48. Got Alaska in our sights, for a 3rd trip, for 2014, April-August. Each one gets longer.

I am retireing again on Dec 31, and we are leaving North Florida in early June for our second trip to Alaska. Our plan so far is to make a stop in Yellowstone, then to Glacier and then north. We'll be in a 42' Beaver Contessa towing a blue Saturn Vue. Hope to see some of you on the road. If we are parked, look for us in the nearest stream with fly rods.

Well, darn, Jim ... I could simply send you the waypoints collected with my Garmin from our numerous trips north. I use the old program nRoute while DH drives so have very accurate data for turnouts, lodges, lunchstops, etc.

No need to do all that work yourself.

I can email a gdb file compatible with Garmin. Send me a private message with your email address if you're interested. Of course, I might sanitize it a bit to keep our favorite fishing holes secret!

I would love those waypoits with the fishig holes!!!! I promise I will not share.

Any info on fishing spots would be awesome! I do a lot of river fishing for salmon and trout in the lower mainland of BC but don't know the good spots to hit heading up to Alaska

Our first trip was in 2009 and is still my favorite trip of all. Will leave either in early June or wait until the FMCA rally in Gillette is over and start north in the 4th week of June.

Guess you can say I will be the first one present, which will make the 29th time stepping foot on Alaska Frozen Soil on January 1, as December this year will mark my 30th year anniversary.

Right now in my location it is presently -23 F, as yesterday morning marked the first day of the 2012-2013 winter by registering the first -20 F below day of the winter season....a blistering -27 F below.

I think last January 1 the temp reached -42 F, and we postponed the annual News Year's Eve fireworks show for a week.

We plan to head out late May or early June for a slow paced trip of at least two months. I have Mile Post and the Church book and will get the tour saver booklet. It's a slow process but I am making a POI for Garmin with the turnouts as defined in Milepost. If you want to try it out after I finish PM and let me know (keep in mind it will only be worth what you pay for it which is nothing). If thing work out I could be in Fla. in Feb and Fairbanks in June.....loving retirement!!!!

Joe b.,

Much to my chagrin, I've found I'm still susceptible to filthy lucre. I've been offered too much money to keep the plug pulled. I'll be "comuting" between Alaska and Houston; which really means that I'll get quite a few trips to Alaska, but not regularly. We'll see what happens in a year or so.

I've told SWMBO that if I'm going back to working/Houston, then I need a fast-mover as well as the PA-12.....and in my terms, that translates to a 185. ๐Ÿ™‚

PA12, I thought you had retired and moved back home to Anchorage? Or are you doing one of the world's longest commutes to work? During the building of the "pipe", I met a couple of folks that worked, the two weeks on and two weeks off schedule. They neither had a residence in Alaska, but would get dropped off the oil company flight, in Anchorage, then catch a flight to Seattle and another one to Tulsa, where they spent the rest of their two weeks off with their families, in their own home, then fly back to Alaska for another two weeks of work. They said the cost of the round trip plane ticket was less than, what it would cost them to have an apartment in Anchorage, plus a car, etc.

Anyway back to the topic, we are scheduled to head back north next summer, as we alternate summers between western Colorado and Alaska. This past summer was spent in Colorado, Utah and Arizona so this up coming summer is for Alaska.
No set plans yet for when we will leave, or the route we will take. My wife is talking about retiring from wage working about June, so that will/could effect when we leave Florida. Also she gets tired of the trip up somewhat, so she is considering flying up to meet me sometimes during the summer and riding back. I probably should start conjuring a bit more, on the subject. Only takes us three or four days and we are on the road. No matter how long I plan, I can count on forgetting something I need and have to replace. Probably have one of the finer collections of camping axes of anyone, 6 or 8 I would guess, Last trip I remembered to take my axe, but forgot camera memory chips, always something it seems. ๐Ÿ™‚
