Looking for some help here...we will be spending a week or so in Galveston then heading south along the coast of Texas. This is unchartered territory for us, so we are looking for some help. RV Park Reviews have very limited reviews and a lot of them are from 2009..:S

When we leave Galveston we plan on hitting the Port Lavaca area give or take 30 miles. From there we are looking at Corpus Christie, again give or take 30 miles.

We have reservations at Tropic Winds in Harlingin so if you've any advice there that would be appreciated also....thanks to everyone....Dennis

Dennis,
Not sure of your timing but the Galveston State Park is a heck of a deal @ $25/day for 50amp & beachfront. We've spent a couple of weeks there. HOWEVER, don't take the bay side sites. You're out of the breeze, off the beach and into the mosquitoes in a big way. Reservations are difficult but we're on the back side of the season now. If you fish, there's no license requirement in a state park.
You're quite a ways from town and the Strand but it's an easy drive in your HHR and there's lots to see and do in Galveston.
Have fun.

Dennis & Debi:

If you like state parks, there is a great one about 1/2 way between Port Lavaca & Corpus Christi. Goose Island State Park, about 7-8 miles north of Fulton - Rockport, Tx. Goose Island State Park, we have stayed there numerous times. There are two separate campgounds, one is in a wooded area and the other is on/near the water. There is a fishing pier and if you are staying in the park, no fishing license is required. Only drawback is that if you stay in the wooded area, there is basically no cell phone or air card reception and TV is spotty. It is a great place and is usually quite full so you may want to call ahead or make reservations. There are several RV Parks or campgrounds in Rockport but again the cell phone and air card coverage is limited.

We stayed at Tropic Winds last year for 3 months, had a good time. Only complaint is the wind, but from what I've heard the whole valley is like that. Most of the spots run east/west and the prevailing wind is from the south. If you park near the rec hall area, be prepared for the sound from the pickle ball games. There are several golf courses in the area if you like golf. You should take in the Harlingen downtown tour, the guide does a good job and is entertaining. They also have "Market Days" which is about 3-4 blocks of flea market on main street. Lots of things to do in the area, too many to try and mention here. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

Maybe we will run into you down there.

Paul...

Thanks for all the input so far....we are not set on Corpus Christie, just the general area. We like to travel about 2-3 hours a day so that fits into our travel plans. We've tentatively set Jamaica Beach RV Park in Galveston, and most likely Texas Lakeside in Port Lavaca although they seem to be a bit away from the Gulf.

Still looking for something between Port Lavaca and Harlingen.

If anyone has stayed at Tropic Winds in Harlingen, any input would be appreciated....thanks....Dennis

You're getting a lot of good input. I would stay out of CC, to me it's kinda depressing and not what I want when snowbirding.

A little off the beaten path, but take a look at Sea Wind. on your way to the RGV.

If you like oysters Port Lavaca is known for them. Make sure you enjoy the fresh wild gulf shrimp while along the coast. Red Lobster will never taste the same after that. We enjoyed our stay at Drifters south of Rockport.

Last spring we spent a week on Mustang Island at Gulf Waters RV Resort. Great prices at this ownership park with RV age restrictions.
Very nice park and just over a small dune from the beach.

It was great finding Texas still has undeveloped beach areas to explore.
Be sure to have dinner at Doc's Seafood.

You may like Pioneer RV Resort on Mustang Island in Port Aransas. Nice park, right on the Gulf, beautiful beach just over the sand dunes and Corpus Christie is just minutes away!

Check out Port Lavaca, TX. A new park, Texas Lakeside RV Resort is open,,, maybe a year now. Clean, very nice, large sites, great people that run it and has all amenities you could ask for.

the state park just outside of galveston is really nice. Try and ride the ferry, and go check out the seawolf. Plus if you like old architecture, there's plenty there.

galv. state park
ferry
seawolf

and if you're going now, be real sure you watch the ground. This is last chance for frisky time for rattlers. the story is from new symrna (long ways away) but the park there at galveston sports its own "watch for snakes on dunes" signs.

Matagorda Bay Nature Park about 30 mi from Port Lavaca as the crow flies. Further by road.

They have weekly and monthly rates during the Winter but you have to call rather than use the website.

We stay at Aransas Bay RV in Aransas Pass. It's across the bay from Corpus Christi. It's not on the beach but it's just a short drive on the free ferry out to the island. The park is pretty new with all paved roads and long concrete level pads with nice landscaping and grass.
