Continuing our first year snowbirding, working our way west now.
We're spending a week at this park. It's basically a sand and shell parking lot with full hookups. It's a small park (50 sites) and the sites are close, but not so close that you can't put the sliders and the awning out. The best part is it's right on Apalachee Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. There is a row of sites that face the bay, and you wake up to wonderful sunrises every clear morning. Here's a pic from my site. This alone makes it worth a stop.
Carrabelle is in the western part of the Florida panhandle and is a completely different state when compared to Palm Beach and Tampa. We noticed the change in the population density (and traffic) once we got north of Crystal River.
We used US 98 to get here. It's somewhat isolated between Perry and Sopchoppy, but it was a pretty, stress-free ride. The area around the park is mostly sparsely populated residential. There is a small market a mile east that has beer, snacks and fishing gear, but the selection is limited. Shopping, such as it is, is in Carrabelle about 4 miles west. There's an IGA food store, an Ace hardware, a Dollar store and a number of fish restaurants. No Enterprise car rental in pickup distance, so all my exploring was done on a bike or bumming a ride from a fellow camper.
On that topic, I crossed paths with Brett Wolfe. He happened to be going east as we were going west so he diverted to Ho Hum for a couple of days so we could meet IRL. I owed him a beer (or 6) for his help when we were looking at Safari coaches. He owned a Sahara and is an excellent source of info on the line and diesel coaches in general. Imagine our surprise when his old Sahara pulls into Ho Hum in the site next to Brett's Alpine! All roads lead to Ho Hum.
And speaking of roads, there are bear crossing signs on US 98 when you get close to Carrabelle. There's a camper here who recommends you take these signs seriously. He hit a bear with his Masserati.
Put Ho Hum on you list of places to go.
