Ideas for 2014 in New Hampshire/Vermont area?

We'll be pulling our fiver to Cape Cod for a week in June, attending our God-daughter's wedding. Looking to do a bit of exploring the week after in the New Hampshire and/or Vermont area. Never been there, although we have toured up the coast into Maine. Looking for some ideas, thoughts, and recommendations as to what to see and where to stay. We're outdoor folks who like wooded, roomy campsites with at least water and electric if not FHU's. Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations would be most appreciated.

June 14-22 is Bike Week in Laconia NH. Gets pretty crowded around there at that time.

Thanks, B&A. Danforth was what we had initially considered, but their minimum reservation period for the on-season is a week, and we'll be looking for something in the area of four nights. So no joy, there. Any other suggestions? Any and all thoughts are much appreciated.

As said already, Danforth Bay is beautiful in May and a great base for seeing the White Mountain area. Lots of space between neighbors. There is a great restaurant which is in an old train station in the close by town of Ossippe. The restaurant was called Mountain View Station.

Well, things have gotten a bit more settled, and we've narrowed the trip down to Cape Cod (Bourne Scenic Canal) for a week, followed by a Tuesday through Friday in Vermont (where we've never been). Any standout campgrounds in Vermont that anyone would like to recommend? Pulling the 38 foot fiver in my sig, and prefer FHU in a wooded setting, as secluded as possible. Greenwood Lodge and Campground looks interesting. Does anyone have any specifics on this one? Any and all thoughts would be most appreciated.

In Vt. we like Champlain Adult Campground on Grand Isle just above Burlington with a stop at Ben and Jerry's on the way. It's right next to a ferry to NY that you could use on the home bound trip. Nice area for biking. Kind of a long drive from the cape if you only have a week.

Might be worth staying along the Ct/Ma. seacoast (Mystic, Plymouth, Gloucester, Boston) or the White Mountains in NH.

Prouty Lakeside Campground, Newport, VT. Wonderful views at the edge of Lake Memphremagog. FHU. We stayed there for a week this past month.

Love Danforth Bay. It's a great base camp for the White Mountains and N. Conway. CG is well-run, has lots of amenities and does have some really nice wooded sites.

Several years ago we did a stop at Danforth Bay during the height of Black fly season, as we were walking around the campground the first day the black flies were not to bad but noticed several people wearing those face/head nets, I didn't think much of it. The next day we went to the store asking for hiking directions and saw those nets for sale... I decided to cheap it out for the hike. What a mistake that was, on our hike we were attacked and none of the bug repellent that we had worked. lesson learned!...next time I will spend the money!

They probably will not ruin a trip but they are VERRY anoying. DEET seems to keep them away a bit. Open breezy areas are not too bad but deep into the trees you will wish you were elsewhere. One time tent camping I tried citronella candles .... but they hovered around the candles on the table for warmth on a cool morning.

I checked out Danforth Bay and really liked what I saw, although the minimum is a week on season while we'll be looking for something more along the lines of four or five nights. Will definitely check out the Quechee-Pine Valley KOA and Lake Champagne Campground as well. Any other suggestions, ideas, whatever, are most welcome.

Question about the black flies. Are they a nuisance, or do the have the potential to ruin a trip? Are they repelled by DEET?

We loved Lake Champagne Campground in Randolph Center, VT. An excellent base for exploring VT in any direction. Quiet, clean, and beautiful.

One thing to remember is that the period from roughly Mother's Day to Father's day is the dreaded black fly season up there. They are more anoying than mosquitoes and a bit smaller. Unlike mosquitoes that breed and hatch in stil water, black flies breed and hatch in running water. Both love the wooded areas.

Other than that, anyplace in Vermont and New Hampshire is great.

X2 on Danforth Bay in NH, large spread out campground, lots of large wooded sites...some with full hookups. The only down side is it's some what out of the way...about 45 min from many of NH's White Mountain attractions.
