Propane At RV Park

We are at a very "high end" RV park and very highly rated - well kinda. No sure who does the rating as they do not appear so in RV Park Reviews.

Here is my phone call to the office about supper time tonight (as we did not see propane tanks) for filling for customers.

Me : Do you sell propane here?

Ofc : Yes, we do - big tanks only.

Me : Big tanks only? You will not fill my 15# that I use for my grill?

Ofc : No, we only do the big ones as we would not know how much to charge for the smaller one.

Silence (because I did not really know how to respond).

Me : Oh?

Ofc : You have to go into xxxxxx (nearest town a ways away) and they will do that.

Me : Oh.

Ofc : Have a nice evening.

End of conversation. I did not ask her what if a "big one" was not completely empty?

As many of you know, we have been part time RV'ing for 19 years that we kinda counted up and came to about 4 1/2 years if full timing and this is our 184 different RV park - never heard this before.

Just hadda share it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Well, in the day of high tech cash registers (point of sale terminals) and low tech cashiers, it's entirely possible that;

1. There's no item to select for 20# propane
2. There's no way to calculate a per gallon price using core math
3. It's unknown how to make change for an item that's not in the database

Be sure to make note of this in your RV Park Reviews review. If previous campers had done this, you would not have been surprised.

I am not posting the name of the park until I at least talk to the Manager. I think that only fair. My other question to that person is what if someone came in knowing they would need some and knowing their tank still has maybe a third left in it - how would you charge? If by weight you can do it with any tank.

It is a beautiful park and the site we have is the one shown on the cover of their literature!

Why are you not giving us the name/location of the RV Park?
Maybe someone is heading there and they can fill their small tanks before arriving.
You would not be bashing the park, just giving us a heads up on their propane service.

Did you post your experience on RV Service Reviews? It may help another RVer. ๐Ÿ™‚

I still buy my propane at a campground near by. I recognize they charge more per gallon, but a benefit for me is free dumping. Sometimes I have to go home with full or half full black and gray tanks. Before going home, I drive to the campground, and they let me dump for free.

I only buy propane from rv park if no other choice. Most charge flat fee per tank size and even if by gallon higher than elsewhere. I have discovered Tractor Supply almost always at least 1.00 cheaper. Don't know how much of the country they cover.

It may just be a sign of the quality of people that the schools are turning out. The simplest math is beyond them, buy something for $4.50 give them a five and they have to use a calculator (or the cash register) to do the math. You can tell them the change is 50 cents but they just keep tapping away. Probably think you are trying to cheat them.

Sounds to me that they just like to be bothered about providing any service that you would need. Just providing the bare essentials... a place to park. Never heard of something like that in the 15 years we have been camping. Good Luck, and Happy Camping !!

I just looked it up - the nearest town is 18 miles away!

If I remember correctly Fort Wilderness in Florida has a flat rates for 20, 30, and 40 lb tanks regardless of how full or empty it is. Now it is a drop off and pick up later and that may be why it's that way.
