Sedona/ Cottonwood

Wife and I are taking a 3 week trip in October. In 2006 we took my kids and used this site to help most of the planning for that 4 week trip of a lifetime. Before spending 6 days at the Balloon festival in Alburquerque, we will spend a few days in Sedona/Cottonwood area and 3 days in Grand Canyon. Had my Balloon Featival reaervations for months. Got the GC reservations today. Tried to get Rancho Sedona reservations and they didn't have any for the 4 nights I wanted.
1. What other recommendations for a campsite in the Sedona area?
2. Will have one night between my GC site and the Balloon site. Want to make up some of the distance so we can be at the Balloon Fest by set up time. Any suggestions for a site between GC and Alburquerque with some good things to do that evening?

34' TT. Love to hike, bike, sunrises, sunsets, do like occasional antique shopping.
Thanks all for any help

I was in Sedona Tuesday. Definitely a tourist trap. Every shop has the same shirts and trinkets and ridiculous prices. We were just on a day trip from Phoenix so I wasn't paying much attention to the campgrounds.

We stayed at Munds RV Park and Resort in Munds,AZ. Very nice park north of Sedona about 40 miles toward Flagstaff. We chose it because the weekly rates were reasonable and we could access all we wanted to see.

Just throwing this out there in case you might consider. Are you able to boondock/dry camp? Our RV is set up totally for off grid including residential fridge now, but even before it was we still did a lot of dry camping, just watched our energy consumption moreso and supplemented with other sources.

We are planning on being in Flagstaff/Sedona/Cottonwood area around Mid May. Have sourced tons of dispersed camping areas. 38ft MH with no toad as we've always travelled for many, many years. If this appeals to you as an option, as it does to us moreso than organized CGs check out Freecampsites.com for one resource, as well others suggest: Allstays, Campendium, BLM & NFS websites.

Have noticed on many posts/forums, private blogs etc lately that folks were really really disappointed with Sedona now being overly tourist and commercialised and wouldn't go back. David Bott = outsideourbubble recent visit; Camperchronicles this or last month write up; JimandBarbsadventures and many many others commented like 2Gypsies did above on their blogs about touristy, nowhere to park, being charged $5 to stop and have picnic at a table etc. These things can if you let them take away from the wonderfulness of the surrounding areas if we let them sadly ๐Ÿ˜ž

One Tip for the Balloon Fest - the line ups are hours long, so maybe consider coming in a couple nights prior instead afternoon/night before, so you can set up relax, rejuvenate etc and watch the show as the later arrivals come in. Just sharing and to each as always their own.

For the Dead Horse Ranch crowd, any suggestions on sites? Back in is fine. Our TT is 34'.

With our 40' motorhome our first choices were Sites #1, 2, 11, 27 in the lower campground or just about any of them up on the hill campground.

Here are some links to places in the Sedona/Cottonwood area that we enjoyed:
Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well National Monuments
Tuzigoot National Monument
Palatki and Honaki Ruins
V-Bar-V Heritage Site
Verde Canyon Railroad
Fort Verde State Park
Cathedral Rock
Gold King Mine
Jerome State Historic Park
the town of Jerome
the town of Sedona
Schnebly Hill Road

For a place to stop between the Grand Canyon and Albuquerque, there is Acoma Sky City said to be the longest occupied location in the U.S. They give tours of the pueblo and there is an RV park next to the casino.

There is also an RV park at the Dancing Eagle Casino.
Safe travels!

Agree on Dead Horse Ranch. Don't remember our site number. But you are near Jerome an old mining town. I would recommend visiting Jerome State park and the Douglas Mansion, which was the home of a former mining magnate. And the Gold King Mine is really neat with wild burro's roaming the street begging for food.Tuzigoot is Indian ruins from the 1300 AD. About 20 miles away is Ft Verde and old cavalary post form the 1880's.Many restored buildings.

We really enjoy Dead Horse Ranch State Park. However, we were just in Sedona two weeks ago and swear we'll never return. The traffic was horrendous and the town full of trinket shops. We enjoy hiking but even the trails were crowded. It has changed drastically over the years when we first started going there and not for the good. By the way, if you're planning to come down or go up via 89A to Flagstaff, there will be closings and road restrictions the whole summer.

We were just in Sedona a few weeks ago as well. Last time we were in Sedona was back in 2001. We couldn't believe how much has changed in 16 years! Too commercialized for us, I doubt we'll be back, but if we do we'll steer clear of downtown Sedona. Not that it's horrible but it's just too touristy for us. Parking a dually in Sedona is a nightmare!

I would recommend Dead Horse State Park. We were just there and extended our visit by four days. We were lucky that we were able to make further arrangements as the park was full every night. Beautiful place though. It is only 30 minutes from Sedona and I agree that the traffic is terrible in Sedona proper. Cottonwood is a nice town, old town has shopping and wine bars, Jerome is close, Montezuma Castle, Montezuma Well, and Tootsigoot are close and one admission price to one gets you into all three. Interesting places. Lots of hiking in the area as well as mountain biking trails. We will return there in the future.

Since 2006 I'm sure there have been a lot of changes. I remember the talk of the vortexes and how many people went out their to gain some "spiritual" experiences.........
For us it was that beauty of early mornings/sunset's looking at His creation displayed in the scenery.
My wife's usual response for "where you want to go" on any of our trips is, "somewhere we haven't". Monument Valley looks pretty promising. That would be somewhere we haven't. Please don't hesitate to give some more suggestions...
Thanks,
Jimmy

If you have an Interest in Monument Valley - These shots should help in the decision.

Then over to Telluride and Ouray to shop on through Silverton to Alburquerque.

Enjoy the trip,

We always felt like SEDONA was always on the pricy side of things... Lots of Rich and Famous folks like to settle there.

The Red Rock canyons around there sure did blow me away the first time I saw them... Waking up with the sun hitting the Red Rock is a sight to see in the mornings...

There is also a scared mtn there called BELL ROCK which has vortexes what some people who believe the vortexes can be used to travel to alternate dimensions.

Sure is an interesting place to visit for sure...
