Which campground on ocean in NC, SC

About to finally buy a TT & want to stay at an oceanfront campground within 6 hours of Asheville, NC where we live.
We considered outer banks but 9 hours is far for us!
Edisto Island has no vacancies as we need the 2nd week in August.
Any ideas as to other campgrounds that may have availability?
My husband would love to fish & we have boys aged 2,8,11 to keep busy. And I'd like to avoid mosquitoes etc as much as poss!
Thx

tragusa3 our August trip was like yours. 110heat index and killer bugs. Our routine was stay on beach with breeze all day and go to camper for dinner and stay in all night. We could never sit out due to the bugs. We love the beach and campground. What an awesome place. We hope to get back soon. Go and have fun.

For bug spray, get something with deet as the active ingredient. It works, and because it works, I'm surprised it hasn't been outlawed yet.

We were there last August and the weather was BEAUTIFUL! You've got to stay out in the ocean breeze (which the front loop is), if under an umbrella, it keeps the bugs and the heat off of you.

A few Augusts ago, we were in the back loop, with no breeze. There were two things to do, stay hunkered in the camper, or be on the beach. Sitting at the campsite was not an option that year. Even opening the camper door for a split second would let 30-40 mosquitoes in. We'd spend each night smashing them on the walls and windows before we could sleep. Ah...memories.

Any high det sprays will work. Hopefully your site is in the front where the ocean breeze greatly helps with the bugs. It is the back section where they can get nasty but really depends if it is a wet season or not.

Lot's of tenters so they are bearable. You will be have a great time and I agree with Gary, even I will be envious of you camping on the beach - unless of course I'm able to leave the area for the mountains for my own camping trip.

Enjoy your stay.

Ahhh ... thank you. I was wondering if we made a mistake reserving in August. Maybe we did but August is pretty much the only time we have to take the Big Trip (as we call it) due to family and work responsibilities.

Sorry to hijack the thread but is there any bug repellent that you'd recommend?

johnm1...........you will be just kicked back there on the beach and we will be right here envying you.
Those bugs have to take a break sometime and it can't be too bad if it is hard to get a reservation year after year. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nope, believe he was just talking about trying to get reservations on the beach this late in the season.

Unfortunately, the bug spray doesn't work very well against our SC no-see-ems and the mosquitos down at Hunting Island have their own Air Traffic Controller since they are so big.

Muggy doesn't exactly describe the conditions here in August. We use that term this time of year, August becomes something a good bit worse.

But don't worry, you will have lots of fun and relaxation down at Hunting Island in August. Been a time or two and never regretted the trips.

On the beach in August, good luck.

Pardon my ignorance but am I missing something here? We're going to be camping at Hunting Island in mid/late August and I know it's going to be hot, muggy (humid) and buggy but we have A/C in the rig and bug spray ... so ... again, am I missing something? Do I need to plan for other issues?

thanks everyone and I also love the more local suggestions, as we are not really familiar with them either! My kids loved sliding rock last year and I didn't know about the campground nearby.
Our plans for the TT may have suddenly been put on temporary hold, so I may have to resign myself to a tent for a while until we save up again....urgghh!

Tents are good too. So are popups and much cheaper than a travel trailer, easier to tow as well. We have friends that bought a used Aliner and love it. The hard sides and top fold out and let them have AC. It's like a folding travel trailer only easier on the fuel because of its low profile when in travel mode. Here's their site

Try to get on the lake at Cascade, otherwise it isn't all that special. We have a favorite spot there that we get every year.

Lots more to do around Cascade than there is at Devil's Fork. Jocassee is awesome though, if you have a boat or can paddle A LOT.

We loved the Myrtle Beach KOA--two blocks or so from beach. Here is a review and pictures from our blog. I would also encourage you to reconsider making the drive to Cape Hatteras--several good options there right on the beach!

Huntington Beach State Park is very nice with open and wooded sites. Some FHU sites and the rest electric.Short walk to the beach. If you want to head north,Kiptopeke State park is at the southern most end of the DelMarVa pinninsula. It has full hook ups and a short walk to the beach.

Since you opened up lakes, consider Devil's Fork SP on Lake Jocassee. Even this late in the season, you should be able to grab something during the week. At only 1.5 hours from Asheville, it would be real easy on the driver.

Another consideration closer by would be Cascade Lakes Recreation Area near Brevard. You can rent canoes, go spend a day at Sliding Rock, take some short hikes in Dupont Forest, or just relax.

Double ditto on Devil's Fork and Cascade Lakes. Since you don't want to do Myrtle Beach again (can't blame you either), those two are good options.

Re Cascade Lakes: Our grands loved Sliding Rock and the canoeing.
