Even though I served 4 years in the Navy I can't belong to the VFW, Because I was lucky enough to serve in peace time.

We have stayed at both Boot Hill and Oliver Lee State Park. Boot Hill is a decent commercial park, but is basicly a big gravel parking lot adjacent to the main highway. They do have a nice size fenced in dog park. Oliver Lee is an older park. The sites are well spaced. Some of the electric and water sites take some creative parking to be able to fit a bigger trailer and the tow vehicle on the site. There are some very long sites in the no hookup loop. There is only one restroom with water/shower facility. If you are on the outside of the loop with the electric sites, the trails to the restrooms/showers require that you walk very near or through the sites on the inside of the loop. I don't recall any sites with shade. When we were there last October, there were quite a few rattlesnakes, so if you have a pet be careful to not let it go where you can not see.

There are a couple of other RV Parks in Alamogorda located along the main highway. They do not appear to be anything special, but also do not appear to be terrible. There are a few sites with electric at the BLM Three Rivers Petroglyph Site between Alamogorda and Carrizzo.
Safe travels!

Oliver Lee State Park is close and the best place to stay. Circle B in Ruidoso is also good.

Definitely take a moonlight ranger-led hike if available.

Aguirre Springs Campground is close but it I wouldn't try it with a rig much bigger than 30+ feet. There are a couple of fairly level sites for an RV but most are too sloped. Senior pass accepted and costs something like $5 to $7 dollars.
Hacienda RV Resort in Las Cruses is pretty good has all the amenities, is freeway close but quiet. Big rig friendly and costs around $40. And it's within walking distance of Old Mesilla Village. Be sure to try the La Posta restaurant for Mexican food - you won't be disappointed.

There are a few reservable sites at Oliver Lee with electricity and water. Most sites have no electricity. Site #2 is really nice, as I remember.

We generally stay at the Air Base but we did stay at a decent state park not far from Alamogordo, don't remember the name. There is also a couple of places in Cloud Croft in the mountains.
