Has anyone tried more than one kind of king pin isolator device on the same trailer?

Mor/ryde vs air type?

Cabinetmaker,

I have the Airborne pin box as well. Still have chucking. What airbag system did you get for the truck? Did you also get on-board air?

I'm thinking about this for my rig.

I will attempt to answer a couple of response's with one reply...

1. I have the Firestone airbag system with the on-board compressor and digital readout. Very handy to be able to adjust the ride while moving to adjust for the load. There are times we do not take the toys or water.

2. We have the standard 5th Airborne kingpin with the internal airbag.

3. Pin weight is right at 20% of gross completely loaded with toys and full water tanks. Prior to the airbags on the truck, the chucking was always present regardless how it was loaded.

I have learned to dump the air when making tight turns while backing into a drive or camp site. This takes a bit of weight off the third axel and reduces scrubbing wear (I hope) on the tires.

The 5th Airborne and the EZ-Flex are the best investments I have made to improve the trailers ride. We have left stuff on the counters by accident and it was still there when we stopped, that wouldn't have happened before.

Do you have the 5th Airborne Tri-Glide or just the standard 5th Airborne with the airbag in the pin box. It seems a pin box with that allows for some fore to aft cushioning would help the chucking issue, like the tri-glide or the Mor-ryde. I get some chucking and am looking into either the Mor-ryde or Tri-glide. Big price difference between the two, so I am tempted to try the Mor-ryde and see how that works.

Airsafe hitch and F450.Hitch lets trailer float over most bumbs, but if you brake really hard or excellerate WFO,it chucks when it reaches the end of its movement, about 4 inches.Driving down the road on most bumbs and expansion joints you can see the rear of the truck bounce, and the 5th float. If you drop the truck of a curb it will bottom out, make a boom, and then resume its job, don't ask...It works really well on dirt washboards, when the truck is bouncing like crazy, the trailer looks like its doing mini pushups, and hardly moving..thats why I got it.

What is your pin weight percentage? I have had several friends when new to towing 5th wheels complain about chucking. In every case they were in the 15% or less range. When they increased it to 25% their chucking went away. Towing level is also required to prevent chucking.

Mor/ryde installed today. We went for a test drive before and after. There is a definite improvement in ride.

We got another trip done and have decided to install a Mor/ryde pin box. Thanks for the responses.

Yes it does, even with bags the truck will still transfer all of it's movement into the hitch and vice versa. The air pin box allows it to almost float on the truck and absorb movement from the truck and trailer.

Search the 5er forum as this topic has come up several times (Mor/ryde vs air pin box). From those who have had both the consensus seems to be they prefer the air pin boxes but they come at a cost and require a bit of maintenance vs the much simpler and cheaper Mor/ryde. I would say if you do a lot of long distance towing go for the air pin box otherwise the Mor/ryde would be my choice due to the simplicity and price. The Mor/ryde is designed to eleminate back/forth chucking while the air pin boxes smooth out up/down movement and also seem to reduce chucking.

Now what if you already have air bags on the rear of the truck? Would the air ride on the pin box be redundant?

No, air bags on the truck are for an entirely different purpose. There are air hitches that serve a similar purpose as an air pinbox.

Often chucking is caused by low pin weight. If your pin weight is less than 20% I would try towing at 25% before spending money on a new pin box.
