Our son is looking to buy a new (to him) fifth wheel, 2011 or newer. He has a GMC 2500 Duramax truck, short bed. He wants a 30-32 ft. fiver. What brand or brands would you recommend? Open Range interests him, told him you guys are the experts, so would love to hear your opinions. As always, thanks in advance for your help.

You don't have to get an AF serviced/repaired at an AF dealer. We bought ours 300 miles from home (Salem to La Grande, Or) even though the closest dealer is 50 miles away. We have since had it repaired at a local RV repair facility. A call to AF is all that's needed and they will find a repair facility near you.

I really love our Jayco Eagle, but I have no idea what classifies as a "mid-priced" fifth wheel.

Thanks so much for all this info. We were going to look this aft., but tree decorating won! Will probably work on this in earnest after the holidays. Thanks again, you've all given us much to think about!

I searched for a couple years and ended up ordering new from the factory at LaGrande, OR. Arctic Fox are a solid four season rig that hold their value and move quickly off RV sales lots. I was real close to buying a CrossRoads Cruiser after searching the first year, when a dealer near us dropped the line I focused on finding a AF. Happy hunting!

We have been full timers for 10 years & have a HH which is not mid range & not make any longer. But have seen most rigs out there. My vote is Artic Fox. After I saw one with two full size four wheelers hanging off the back stacked one above the other. They were from the NW & liked to winter in the desert ride 4 wheelers did not like toy halers, did not want to pull a trailer. So he had taken the front wheels & put them behind the rear for balance.

I guess what I am trying to say is. If Artic Fox was not a very well built rig he could not have carried those 4 wheelers. So if I was looking for a new rig Artic Fox would be on my short list.

We bought a new Sabre last year and have spent over 50 nights in it so far, I really think that you would be hard pressed to find more bang for your buck than the Sabre.

Susan, We have a 2009 Open Range and are finishing our 5th year with it.It has been a good unit and the factory is great. Ours was the 162 unit they built. At first they had a little problem but have definately have taken care of those problems. I would vote to have him check out their website They have come out with more models since we got ours. They are lighter than some of the same length. Ours is about 34' and weighs about 2000# lighter tan our previous 5er of the same length. Good Luck in his venture.

The 08 Sunnybrook we got this summer is still high quality, has a brute-strong frame, morryde and has no lippert anywhere. I've heard SB quality was going down around 2011 so one would have to be inspected very closely but it would definately be on my list. Craig

Wow, thanks for all the good feedback. Had not thought of Arctic Fox, but will see if we can find a dealer. Also appreciate the info on the newer used medels, maybe new is the way to go. He has beenusing our '93 Mobile Scout. It is still in amazing shape, but has no slides and he wants more room. Like many others have expressed on his forum, am sad Sunny Brook has been sold, same company made our 30 ft Mobile Scout, great little trailer. Thanks again for all your suggestions.

To give you an idea of the deals that can be found on the "new" lot. The 2009 Open Range 385RLS we have we bought new in December of 2010 for $36,000. I did a search last week for that year and model and found 3 for sale across the US. The lowest price was $35,999. So after 3 years of use we have lost zero equity. Find the model he wants then search the internet for the best price. You can probably save enought to pay to have it delivered from halfway across the country.

Another thought on a 1 or 2 year old model, Why did the owner get rid of it??? Some are dumped that quick because they had more problems than the owner could deal with. Granted some just upgrade every couple of years, but would suggest looking very, very closely at those newer units.

Another Arctic Fox supporter here. We own a 2013 27-5L with a few upgrades, there are not many with the Silver Fox model. Is 43,300 plus tax, tag, title to high? The only negative thing I can think of, especially with the 2013 is weight. Ours ready to camp with about 20 gallons water, 80lbs. propane, two T105's weighs in at 11,500 and a pin weight of 2400.
